Facebook Facebook is one of the biggest web sites in the world and is visited by 400 million people a month. It made Mark Zuckerberg, its founder, one of the richest young men in the world. In the book “The Accidental Billionaires” and the movie “Social Network”, the story of how Zuckerberg gained five hundred million friends through Facebook but lost his best friend Edurado Saverin is portrayed. The story has many ups and downs, but is a truly fascinating one. Facebook has revolutionized the way that people communicate and interact in a social manner.
In many ways, it has brought the world closer together. The fact that it destroyed so many friendships among those who created it is a very ironic fact. A great deal of attention has been paid to this issue, and for good reason: it is a highly dramatic one. In both the “Accidental Billionaires” and the “Social Network” the story is dramatized and presented for all to see. The reader and viewer comes to see how money got between friends and how ruthless business practices destroyed relationships.
As Facebook got bigger, things became more complicated. Eduardo began trying to implement new business ideas without telling Mark. In one email exchange that has become public Mark wrote to Eduardo as follows: “You developed Joboozle knowing that at some point Facebook would probably want to do something with jobs. This was pretty surprising to us, because you basically made something on the side that will end up competing with Facebook and that's pretty bad by itself. But putting ads up on Facebook to advertise it, especially for free, is just mean.
” We see how things were spinning out of control. So much was at stake with the development of this massive website, that both young men began to feel the stress. In the book we see how both men reacted to the problems that were developing and especially to the straws that broke the camel's back. As the author of the “Accidental Billionaires” writes: “To Eduardo, this was a betrayal, pure and simple. Mark had betrayed him, destroyed him, taking it all away. It was all right there, in the papers in his hands, as clear as the pitch-black letters imprinted on those ivory-white pages” (228).
It was true that Mark Zuckerberg and Edurado Saverin were good friends at the beginning of founding Facebook, and it is equally true that their friendship was destroyed forever by a project bigger than either of them. Facebook has changed the world forever. It has shaped our lives and the way we communicate and the way we present ourselves to the world. It has grown massively in only a short amount of time and it has made its founders richer than the could ever have imagined. But along the way there have been casualties.
Friendships have been destroyed and people have lost what they once thought was most important. The story of the founding of Facebook reminds us what is truly important about life.
