The paper “Main Determinants about Woman Succession of Family Enterprise in China” is a controversial example of human resources dissertation. This dissertation examines the factors the influence female succession in Chinese family businesses. Unlike western nations, there is a bias against female succession, and the objective of the dissertation is to identify factors that influence female succession. A literature review provided a number of factors and these were arranged in five categories, macro, micro, personal, business, and inter-personal.

Each of these categories had a number of individual forces, and a total of 25 forces were identified for all the categories. The next step was to obtain a ranking to determine the strength of the forces, identify the dominant factor and forces, and the supportive forces.A survey instrument was designed and administered to seven business experts. These experts are business leaders of different Chinese business houses and they were selected from various sectors such as manufacturing, construction, hospitality, electronics assembly, and others.

The instrument had 13 close-ended and open-ended questions, and the respondents were required to rank the forces, and to give their opinion on female succession. The responses were analyzed and discussed in detail. The overall conclusion is that a number of factors act against female succession in the family business. Among these the macro, micro, and interpersonal categories are dominant. Other conclusions are that the forces of culture, industry environment, and personal ambition of other heirs are important factors that influence their selection.

It was seen that the third generation of family businesses that diversified and expanded into new-age industries show greater acceptance of female leaders.1.
