Many do acknowledge that he is one of the greatest leaders during his time. His advocacy for non-violent civil disobedience influenced many others into choosing this form to fulfill their ambitions. He is one important figure that defines the Indian freedom struggle. He studied law in England and returned to India to practice in 1891. When studying law, he was happy that he now knew more about the practices that define leadership and the best ways of holding on to what was just. However, on return to India, he met the different side of injustice and was ready to use his skills to serve the poor rather than profit from it (Barnabas & Clifford, 2012). The goal was to create a platform that would open the eyes of the oppressed and show them that they had rights in their homeland. This started when he went to South Africa and experienced the sufferings of Indians who had been taken to work on various projects by the colonialists. He led these Indians in the fight against racial discrimination through a strategy called the Ahimsa or the non-violence strategy (Winston, & Ryan, 2008). This was also backed by another one called Satyagraha or holding to truth. When he was done there, he returned to India and used similar tactics to fight the British without the need for weapons. He went to prison several times but he never relented in his quest for a better India. He would practice these acts together with the rest rather than preach to the followers and expect them to go and do it then report to him. He was involved entirely in the whole process (Barnabas & Clifford, 2012).
