NEW WAYS OF WORKING: DOES FLEXIBILITY IN TIME AND LOCATION OF WORK CHANGE WORK BEHAVIOR AND AFFECT BUSINESS OUTCOMES? Introduction
The modern economy is changing from agriculture and industrial manufacturing to a service and knowledge driven economy. The workers are not left behind and it is therefore very common today to find employees opting for part time work options and manage their personal life. Most of the emerging societal demand necessitates workers to be involved in part time employment contracts. The craving desire to lead a given life in this era of globalization has seen many people opt for flexible work option. The question remains the influence such part time employments have on the overall performance of the workers and aggregate outcome on the bussiness. There are a number of variables that need to be captured when handling this research study since it is a bit critical and demanding in terms of experiments and the aggregate analysis. A number of extraneous varies have also been at play and may dilute the expected outcome, recommendations and conclusion. Some statistical methods have been applied besides econometric methodologies to analyze the relationship between employment time against the time committed for study and the resultant employee at the end of the study period. Among the statistical tests of significances in cause-effect relationship between the level of performance and the time put in the part time
Current study
The current research study is aimed at showing the underlying correlation between flexible workers rate of productivity compared to study performance of employees under normal work time arrangement. The main objective of this study is to unveil more information regarding the positive effects of working under flexible option versus the outcome of the business and to what extent being employed on flexible arrangement affects ones overall performance of the firm. Finally, the results of this study will not only help readers understand the merits and demerits of flexible working for the workers and the firm in this era of increased service industry but, it can also help them to improve their time management in balancing work and family.
Participants
The participants that form the sample consisted of 73 employees who were to fill the questionnaires. This sample is considered representative of the population and forms the basis for generalization for the outcome of the research.
Instruments
Considering the data given in this experiment, it is important to note that there exists a strong relationship between the productivity of the workers, outcome of the firm and the type of work arrangement. Graphs and pie charts have been used to give a clear picture of the research findings in regard to influence of flexible time and location as far as productivity and business outcome is concerned.
Results
T-test coefficient and the pie charts and graphs shows that the outcome on the workers output versus the time dedicated for family and other issues in the study is positive. Statistical presentation of data on pie chart and bar charts asserts a correlation between workers in flexible work and place arrangement and their overall influence in the organizational performance outcome shows that the two variables are closely positively correlated. This is due to the extraneous variable factor which may not be conspicuous but also contribute in the final results of the research findings. All the tables show nonparametric statistical analysis with a sample size of 73. It gives a trend which is consistently positive. This result need to be discussed from two dimensions before seeking the opinion of the hypothesis. There is the magnitude of the numerical value of the coefficients and the sign which in this case is positive.
The pie charts gives a visual impression of the relationship between the two variables and it is quite easy to understand relative to other methods of analyzing this data (Berk, 2004). It is a graphical presentation of the relationship between the time periods spent in other activities not related to work against the time period put into learning by the workers.
Discussion
The concern is what causes the observed trend and the appropriate policy recommendations. Globalization has far stretching effects that cannot be matched to any other form of global social order. The current technological explosion coupled with increased improvement in communication information technology has opened doors for workers to work part time and in different convenient locations. The main problem is how to the human resource department can balance this together with the need for greater output (Coon, Mitterer, Talbot & Vanchella, 2010). Any employment demands commitment and personal sacrifice implying an opportunity cost in choosing employment for learning and vice versa. In other words, when a worker goes to take up another activity, there is a shift in concentration from job work to other activities and this highly affects the productive capacity of the workers. The working conditions are very tight in the world of today due to competition among firms and individuals and this leaves the workers taking part time job to adhere to the harsh employer demands which gradually dislodge the memory from other workplace issues. Wages or salaries are pegged on the amount of time worked and experience and this compels workers to take longer hours working and this entails both mental and physical efforts necessitating seeking alternative appraisal procedures. Past research has also established that the real life work is slightly related to what is learnt..
Learning is a process which requires in depth attention and commitment since it has the listening part and memory component. That explains why it is difficult to mix education with job especially among the couples. There is the issue of conflicting interests between job and class time for the parents since in most cases some of their family issues clash with the job time and this translates to unsettled mind of the workers in the effort to reconcile the two hence poor results. The motivation behind part time work looks more appealing since the result is realized as soon as it is accomplished compared to whole day that may seem not rewarding to the workers in the short run. In respect of such immediate reward, workers tend to sacrifice even the time they should cool off from working to do the job which tends to erode memory leading to stagnated retention ability of the brain. Psychology and sociology scholars observes desire to own and be independent as the main factor that leads to the involvement of the worker in flexible working to engage in jobs while at the same time working.
It is worth noting that some workers can work but still achieve better poor. This is the point where the extraneous variables chip in to determine the list expected outcome in a research work.
Conclusion
Due to the rising increasing performance of the workers and the firm due to part time, concern has been debated by the society to promote family strength. The best thing that can be done to remedy this challenge is a consultative research and policy making by the government, international community and the scholars on how to device appropriate measures that would be fair to both parties. Most of the workers stray into part time jobs due to high prospects of employment perfomance (Berk,2004). It is imperative that the performance of the workers is given serious attention since it forms the basis of organization output.
