Personal and Professional Development Every organization does experience problems some between the management and employees. However, these problemscan be very hard to solve if managers can only understand the issue but no step is taken to rectify it. In some instances, it is even harder to know the right steps that need to be followed in solving the problem at hand. This is the reason why some mangers use poor strategies which only makes the situation worse (Butterfield 2012).
Dachis (2011) notes that, when a problem is spotted at the workplace, the first thing that a manager needs to do is to understand the problem by focusing on the real issue at hand. Like in the scenario before us, Charles must first understand the problem, which in this case he has. In the first scenario, for instance, Charles has established three major issues which he has to deal with. First, is the fact that Alison has consistently been reporting late at work citing her dependence on boyfriend who brings her using his car. The second issue that Charles has to deal with is the fact that even after reporting to work Alison still takes too long to come from lunch. Finally, she is proving to be a bad influence to other girls.
From Alison’s statement, it is clear that she claims that she always report late to work because she is brought by her boyfriend. The fact that she is brought by her boyfriend is not a big issue in my view, rather, what makes her report late. From my analysis, it is clear in my mind that her lateness is mainly occasioned by the fact that she spends a lot of time in traffic jam. As such, the fast action that should be taken by Charles is to call Alison privately in his office and advise her to try waking up early enough so that she doesn’t spend too much time on traffic jam. After doing this, Charles should give her sometime to monitor if there is any change. If this fails, he should consider organizing for a company bus to always pick up employees very early in the morning as this will prevent Alison or any other employee from giving excuse.
It is worth noting that Alison may insist on using her private means of transport, which is her right. If this is the case, then the Charles should give her a warning of dismissal from employment if she persists on reporting late. This, I believe will help solve the problem of lateness.
The issue of coming back to work late from lunch is another problem that Charles has to deal with. I believe that everyone does something for a reason. Nevertheless, there is no explanation provided regarding why she keeps taking long to be back from lunch. Therefore, Charles should not rush in making her conclusions rather he should call her in his office, and get an explanation from her why this is so. One possible reason that could be found here is that she travels several miles away from workplace to get a hotel where she can take her lunch among many other reasons. If it happens that it is the distance she travels to get a hotel, then Charles should consider ensuring that workers are provided with lunch as this can help solve the problem. This is because it will prevent all the workers from having to leave the company in search for food. Once this has been done, Charles should not assume that all is now right; instead, he should provide a time limit taken by each employee during lunch time.
The second scenario pits Charles against Richard Meacher who appears very moody and rude at some times. This has raised a lot of concerns even from the company’s customers who complain of her attitude. The fact that customers have begun complaining of his attitude shows the magnitude of problem. However, just like in Alison’s case, it is important that Charles understand the reasons as to why Richard appears moody. Psychologists argue that moodiness is natural and that habitually moody people prioritize their own feelings above those of others. It is good that Charles has made effort and understood that it is family issues that are making Richard become moody.
It is argued that the best way to help a moody person is to show some sense of understanding or listening to them (Dachis 2011). As such, Charles should take a bold step and sit with him and provide him with some counseling so that he can stop bringing family issues at workplace as this affects the performance of the company. Charles should also be very careful not to play their game. By this, I mean that Charles should not give Richard a preferential treatment. This is based on the research finding which reveals that people will not change if they are rewarded for not changing. In fact, Charles should stop tiptoeing around Richard or providing any allowance for his ordeals.
I would also advice Charles not to take the issue personal because it is only Richard and not him. From the explanation, it is also evident that Richard is suffering from other disorders such as sore throat, a migraine, biliousness and tummy upset. In this regard, I would recommend that Richard to be given time off to seek for medical treatment as this may also have been contributing to his mood.
Apart from the fact that Richard’s behavior is wanting, the assistant manager also reveals that his performance is below standard. This is a serious problem that Charles has to handle with a lot of care. First, it is important that he should establish from others whether the allegations of sub-standard performance laid against Richard by the assistant manager is true or false. If this comes out to be true, then Charles as a good manager should organize for training lesions and induction processes where Richard would be given somebody with experience to teach him. Training is the best way by which an employee can improve his work performance. However, dismissal can be used as the last resort if Richard can still not meet the organization’s set standards. Nevertheless, in case Charles resort to dismissal, then it should be done in accordance with the law to avoid judicial implications.
I believe that if Charles takes my pieces of advice into consideration, he will be able to solve the problems of Alison and Richard, thereby improving the performance of the company.
