Designing My Dream Job Harry R. DePollar Strayer (Suitland Campus) Md. Stacey Flood BUS 3310 - Human Resource Management February 28, 2013 Introduction: Getting appointed to his or her dream job is the dream of every graduate. After the completion of one’s studies, one starts hunting for the type of job that suits him. The dream job may be of a technical nature, service type, entrepreneur type, company based, or the self-owned business. No matter what type of job it is, it always fascinates someone (Levinson & Perry, 2009). The choice of the job may depend upon the type of early education, or it may give insight into the future studies plan. The field of science I want to pursue is technology. With the increasing technological exposure, every graduate wants to be a part of the successful and drastically boosting Information Technology Organizations. The impacts of technology in our society are so clear that no one can deny the fact that we humans are now totally technologically dependent. Students in the universities are not only choosing this field of science, but they are also pursuing their own research in this particular field. There are several huge companies that are competing in this field. The list is endless from Super Laptops by Dell to the micro-chip designs by the Fabless Company. My Dream Job: My dream job is the job of the analyst software engineer in a leading oil and gas company. The combination of the software technology and the oil and gas sector is a rare one, but if we look deep into both fields, the relation gives birth to several new, challenging opportunities. These opportunities will help boost the learning process in both fields simultaneously. The combination of the software technology and the field-based job is fascinating. Normally the software engineers sit in air conditioned offices and pursue designing most of the time. In the field-based job, the engineer will be able to learn and implement the advance theories of information technology in relation to the oil and gas field. Job Duties: The field-based analyst software engineer will be assigned many duties. The job mainly comes under the supervision of the company’s managing director. In some urgent cases the engineer can report directly to the director. The analyst software engineer can have a group of technical trainees. The main responsibility of the analyst software engineer is to invent the technology tactics and several code-based applications that are relevant to the field operation. Challenges: The engineer can face several challenges while working in the field. Some of them can be the automation of the field computers and the development of proper technology infrastructure within the remote field location. There can be situations in the organization when they need a specific type of software, specially designed for field operation, which can help them in predicting the future gas pressure from previous readings. In this way, the analyst software engineer has to design an application for a particular gas well to predict its future behavior. The Personality: The ideal person for the post of the analyst software engineer should command a personality with many prominent features. He or she should be proficient in calculations, friendly in nature, a quick decision maker, and must be an excellent programmer. The chief personality trait that one should have is leadership qualities. The Compensation Package of the Field Based Analyst Software Engineer: The analyst software engineer in an oil and gas company deserves a healthy compensation package. He or she has to live in the remote field. At the end of the year he or she will be given a twenty-eight day vacation to spend time at home. Moreover, he or she will be given several other types of luxury allowances along with the basic pay. The simple account of the compensation package is presented here: Basic Salary and Accommodations: Field analyst software engineers should be given a market competitive salary package, with a minimum of $500k yearly. In addition to the company maintained car, the company should offer accommodations to live on the field. In addition to having a small apartment at the field office, the package should include this list as follows: Health Package: The analyst software engineer should be given family health benefits along with the family health insurance. Moreover, a company-supported medical facility on the field should also be available. All members of the family, including parents, can enjoy this health facility. Conveyance Allowance: With the company-maintained car, the company is also responsible to bring the engineer on the field at its own expense, as well as dropping off at the facility at the end of the year by a charter; or the routine flight should additionally be sponsored by the company. Entertainment and Recreational Allowance: The engineer should be given a healthy entertainment and recreational allowance to relax at the end of the year. Companies can sponsor a tour to a recreational place. The engineer should be taken on a recreational tour at least once a year along with the other employees. Pension and the Retirement Funds: Analyst software engineers must get enough retirement funds to spend a tension-free life after retirement. Moreover, the pension facility should also be there, which can be equal to half of the pay or the quarter. After the death of the engineer, the family can avail this facility. Also, the other benefits like car, healthcare, and the accommodations should be given up to five years after retirement. And in case of the early retirement, these facilities should be given up to a pre-decided retirement period. Life Insurance should be paid for by the company and carried without interruption for him and the family indefinitely. Rationale for the Compensation Package: The analyst software engineer on the field owns a lot of responsibilities. He or she has to work hard and continuously maintain an excellent degree of work quality. Living on the remote field without family is not an easy task. They can become exhausted and depressed. In this way, the company should take responsibility for the well being of their family by providing the health and the accommodation facility, according to the federal employee health program. Their tension can be released by the recreational tours and other entertainment allowances, as described by the federal employee allowances program (Mayhew, 2012). Performance Appraisal Program: Along with the conduct-based appraisal report, the analyst software engineer should submit a technical appraisal report. In the technical appraisal report, he or she should report about his technical learning and achievements. Furthermore, the future objectives should also be indicated. It is necessary to consider the resource utilization by a field analyst software engineer. The analyst should not only submit his or her own appraisal, but he or she should also brief the administration about the performance of the technical trainees. The analyst software engineer is responsible to assign small projects to the trainees to help boost their learning. The following type of questions can be added to the Analyst Engineer Appraisal Program. What do you consider to be your most important achievements of the past year? What elements of your job do you find most difficult? What elements of your job interest you the most and least? What do you consider to be your most important aims and tasks in the next year? What sort of training/experiences would benefit you in the next year? Not just job skills also your natural strengths and personal passions youd like to develop, you and your work can benefit from these. What technical areas are most important for the trainees? What type of projects do you mostly assign to the trainees? What are your views about self learning by the trainees? What are the technical areas do you like to be assisted in by the trainees? What type of technology enhancement do you want to suggest to the organization? What are new technology changes of the field you are aware of? What new type of technology enhancements you are studying presently? Rationale for the Added Questions in the Appraisal Program: The field analyst software engineer is responsible to produce more field analyst software engineers for the future. He or she should seriously consider the training of the new batch. To help them understand the technology infrastructure of the field, they should guide them in each and every step. Moreover, an analyst software engineer is responsible for the inventions in the organization. He or she should always search for the new and upcoming market arrivals. The technology is changing with the pace of time. It is necessary for the field analyst software engineer to keep pace with the changing technology environment (Grote, 2005). According to the policy of the company each employee should submit the appraisal reports for future grading. On the basis of the signed appraisal, the employee receives the yearly increment and a promotion in the organization. Moreover, it is mandatory for an employee to justify the reasons properly presented in his or her appraisal report against the relevant authorities of the organization (Minnesota, 1974).
