How I had prepared for the performance review Comparing my actual performance with the development plan It has been discussed in the first module already that PDP is a continuous process and it has four steps: Identify the problem Planning on how to rectify the problem Taking actions and recording the actions Reviewing and analyzing the outcomes of the actions In the first module, I developed three important and SMART goals. I have made different progress and efforts to achieve these set objectives. I have been successful in achieving most of these objectives. However, I have not been able to achieve some of the goals or objectives that I set in the first module. In the first module, I prepared a plan to achieve these three goals in six months. These goals were: a. Career development and acquiring a senior management position within the coming years b. Growth and stability for achieving a reputable position c. Development of appropriate skill to gel in the environment For the achievement of the first goal i.e. to acquire a position in the senior management, I have taken several steps and have achieved some of the short term goals. For instance, my first month goal was about analyzing the curriculum and designing it in a way that my objective will be achieved. I was successful in achieving this goal. For this, I read different papers, conduct secondary research, read books and other important material. All this helped me in increasing my knowledge regarding the HR policies and practices. Similarly I was successful in accomplishing the goals of the next two months as well. However, I was not able to achieve the fourth month goal as I was unsuccessful in progressing to the company or to meet with any particular person in an organization to discuss about the practices and professional environment. As I was not able to achieve this goal, therefore my next goal was related to analyzing the curriculum defined and then making improvements. Therefore my next two goals were not also achieved as they were linked and dependant on the fourth month goal. For a CIPD professional, it is important to learn about the techniques and practices used by different firms. Therefore, this experience would be highly beneficial for me and my professional career. However, I am slightly satisfied that I have been successful in achieving two of the three goals. I was able to achieve what I planned to do in the next six months regarding growth and stability for achieving a reputable position in the organization as well as developing the skills to work in a team. As a CIPD professional, it is one of the requirements for being an associate member of CIPD that the candidate should have good interpersonal and technical skills. In the past few months, I have been successful in improving my interpersonal and technical skills. Important Points for Future Now I need to make another plan of how to go about next six months and then make sure that my new plans are accomplished. My invitation for having a meeting was not accepted by two executives that I emailed, and now I need to send the initiation to more people or maybe I can use references to have an interview with an executive. I planned to conduct interview to know about how employees work and behave in a professional working environment as well. From this interview, I wanted to do a gap analysis and identify the areas for improvements in my personality. I have been successful in improving my communication skills as well as ability to work in teams and lead the team. Therefore the past few months have been exceptional in terms of improving my ability. However, it is critical for me to identify important points that I need to learn in future. For this, I will conduct a SWOT analysis of my personality and then will prepare another PDP for the development of next 12 months. Using SWOT analysis, I will be able to identify my weaknesses and strengths as well as the opportunities that I have along with the threats. SWOT Analysis Strengths To gel with other team members Effective team player Can lead the team Help other team members in crisis situation Leadership skills Strong analytical skills Weaknesses Limited social circle At times I am not able to communicate my message properly Lack of professional experience Opportunities Different certifications can help me in my professional career Growth of HR professionals and consultants internationally Specialization in different HR domains are getting very popular Threats Financial crisis influenced the growth of consultants and such crisis could influence the future A number of people are planning to become HR consultants and this can be a threat Important points to be considered in future To become a successful CIPD professional I need to further enhance my knowledge about HR practices. I need to learn how different organizations are using their HR department to improve their productivity and performances. Information regarding HR practices would be valuable for me in identifying and learning how organizations are using and can use different practices to motivate the employees. This will also help me in identifying how organizations are applying different HR concepts. Moreover, I need to expand my social circle and use this social circle to be effective. The role of social circle is very important in today’s environment. In addition to this, I need to further improve my leadership skills as this will be helpful for my future. Also I need to get some professional experience and for this reason, I need to undergo any internship. This would be helpful in learning about different practices at the organization and to get familiar with how organizations work. New and modified PDP for next 12 months: TIMEFRAME My personal goals are: My professional goals are: Success Criteria Next 6 months Identifying jobs and knowing about the market practices Identifying the skills that I need to develop to progress in the professional environment Identifying what different organizations are looking for in different jobs and then identifying the kind of job that I would like to take on To learn about the criteria used by different firms for hiring candidates related to my field To identify my current skills and what further skills I need to develop or enhance to get a good job Next 9 Months Learn about different HR practices and successful and unsuccessful case studies Identify and learn about how different organizations have been successful or have failed in using different HR practices Learn how organizations have applied HR concepts and practices at the workplace Learn the success factors of different successful organizations Identify and examine about the important factors that lead to the failure of the organizations To know about different employment laws To learn about how organizations apply HR theories studied To learn how organizations use and modifies its HR practices and policies to motivate the employees Next 6– 12 months Expanding my Social Circle Meeting with different people and developing and expanding my social circle Increase the use of social media websites and get connected with my friends and family members to use them when needed Identify my friends and family members that are already working in professional organizations To expand my social circle Interacting more with my new friends Meeting more people and forming relationships with them Creating a list of my friends and family members that can be used in future for references Next 12 months Internship Finding an internship at the professional working environment to learn about how organizations practice different HR concepts Getting a placement in an organization for internship and ensure that projects assigned during internships are completed properly PDP and learning experience from the module This course has been an exceptional learning process as I have gained the basic knowledge of PDP. The course has also been helpful in about the factors that impact employment relationships and employment laws as well as performance management. The first part of the module helped me to learn about the skills that I need to develop for becoming an associated member of CIPD. I analyzed the skills required for being an associated member of CIPD and then I formulated different goals that I would like to achieve and the skills that I would like to build for becoming a professional member of CIPD. From then on, I have been focusing on achieving these goals so that it can help me in becoming a better professional. In the first assignment, I also prepared plans on how to achieve the set objectives and goals. I also analyzed my strengths and weaknesses so that I can what strengths and skills can help in my future and what are the weaknesses at which I need to work on to become a better professional. The second assignment was also very helpful in making me think broader. I identified the factors that influence the employment relationship and employment laws. I used different sources to analyze and examine about the relationship and the factors that impact the employment relationship. These factors can be segmented into external and internal factors. Also the assignment learnt about the employment status such as employee, workers, and self-employed. So, the assignment helped me in knowing about different status of employment. I also researched about the rights of employees during the employment relationship including work life balance. In this assignment, I also learnt about how to terminate the employee relationship, and exit interviews. I thoroughly researched the website of CIPD to know about different human resource management concepts and practices such as equal pay, discrimination, employment laws, dismissal, exit interviews, discrimination, discipline etc. For this assignment, I also reviewed different other sources such as online articles, and published information on the UK government website. The last assignment was about the performance management. At the time of preparing the last assignment, I felt that I already have sufficient knowledge regarding performance management. However when I started to work on the assignment, I realized that my knowledge was insufficient as the topic was vast. Therefore, to prepare this assignment, I reviewed some books, journal articles, and published papers to learn about performance management. Studying these materials has helped me to gain knowledge about the topic. As I started studying, I prepared and highlighted different sources so that I could include in the paper. Once I had complete studying, I prepared some bullets and then started to write the assignment. Once I completed writing my assignment, I had another quick look at some of the references that I used. Reviewing these references helped me to add more important points to further enhance my research. After doing this, I finalized my paper. Reflective statement The module has helped me to know about the importance of CIPD and associated members of CIPD. This module has been useful in making me learn about the personal development. I have learnt that it is a continuous process and the person has to continuously learn about developing the skills to become a successful professional. I learnt that it is important to first identify, plan, take actions and then review these actions in order to consciously improve and become a successful professional. Therefore a person has to keep on improving and evaluating his skills and actions so that he can become a qualified person. Moreover, I prepared some SMART objectives in the module so that at the end of the module, I would be able to learn and develop my skills. The first part of the module also helped me in analyzing my personality, my strengths and my weaknesses. By analyzing my own strengths and weaknesses, I was able to analyze what I need to learn in the next few months. I prepared a plan and I have been working on accomplishing these objectives. The second assignment of the module was also helpful in knowing about different factors at the workplace. I learnt about the importance of employment relationship as well as employment status. This assignment helped me in thinking in a broader manner about the human resource practices at the organization. I learnt about important concepts and policies related to employment relationship. Moreover, I learnt about the employment laws, and the importance of employment laws. At the time of preparing this assignment, I realized that it is important to keep a work life balance. Keeping a work life balance not only helps in relaxing the mind of the employee but it is also helpful in improving the productivity. It is also critical to fairly treat other members at the workplace as it helps in creating a good working environment. Overall, this assignment helped me to learn about the fair human resource practices that are applied in the organization and how helpful these practices are in creating an efficient working environment. This assignment has been a great learning experience as I have learnt about the importance of performance management in the organizations. Previously I knew that it is important to measure the performance, however after conducting in-depth research for this assignment I have realized how critical performance management is for the organizations. There is a significant relationship between motivation and performance management. This research has been significant in making me learn about the linkage between the motivation, rewards and performance management. I have learnt that employees are motivated with different incentives and rewards and when in organizations rewards and incentives are given on the performance, then this creates a competition among employees and thus it enhances the overall performance of the organization. Thus, it can be said that performance management is an important aspect that must be dealt properly and I believe that it is as critical as formulating the reward strategy. I believe that employees may get demoralized if their performance is not measured and managed by the management. Therefore, I have planned when I would become the Human Resource Manager I would emphasize a lot on selecting the right methods to manage and measure the performance of employees. In this assignment I have also learnt about the factors that could positively or negatively influence the performance management and I will make sure that I keep such factors in mind. I believe that performance of employees should be measured and managed on a regular basis and using standardized way so that the performance of every employee is comparable. This assignment has been very helpful and I would use information gained from this assignment in my future. Read More
