Hospitality Management: Parkers Hotel London Though a broad term, effective management is the factor behind the success of every organization. In the hospitality industry, proper management through effective leadership must be embraced to ensure that set goals and objectives are realized. Many hotels in the world have not been successful due to a number of reasons, all associated with management. Parkers Hotel London is among the world leading hotels in the hospitality industry. The competitiveness of the hotel in the hospitality industry largely depends on the expertise of its employees. Human resource department has to go an extra mile by offering effective services to the employees if an organization has to succeed. Competition in the hospitality industry especially in the UK make the human resource department of an organization to evaluate modalities, which it would use to win employees interest to service, they offer. The hotel commands a large workforce, which caters for clients who visit the hotel. Clients in the hospitality industry are sensitive to response their get from the hotels. This consideration influences the ability of human resources department to conduct its labour sourcing effectively or it would risks loosing clients. The paper analyses the strengths and weakness of human resource management of Parkes hotel. Human resource management is very essential in hospitality industry. Definition given to HRM suites the purpose it serves in the organizations. Perkes hotel boosts of its workforce that has demonstrated high ability of responding to the clients of the hotel. Its means that the core functions of the human resource department of the hotel are perfect. The functions include attracting, training, selecting, rewarding and assessment of employees, while providing leadership that complies with the existing labour laws (Landsbergis, 2009:2). HRM functions in Perkes hotel thus offers liaison with representatives from labour unions. The strength of the human resource department would translate to success of the organization. Perkes hotel has demonstrated to its employees that its recruitment process is effective. Many organizations find recruitment process as a daunting task because of failure to identify the right labour. The organization announces its vacancies through the organisation website. Many interested individuals find time to go through the required qualification before submitting their application. The recruitment process is usually competitive enabling the organisation to source for the right employees. Employee’s treatment is crucial factor because it influences the work out put of an employee. Perkes hotel has been able to identify this factor as one of its strengths. The organisation has designed mechanism of ensures good treatment to its employees. Working hours is a factor that influences employee satisfaction. The organisation has designed flexible working hours for its employee in accordance with the labour laws (Landsbergis, 2009:6). Many employees of the organisation feel that their working condition is satisfactory. Working condition affects employee relation because it defines the attitude the employee would develop towards work. Adherence to the existing laws is important because it helps the organisation to achieve the desired results. For instance, sometimes the organisation faces the challenge of many customers during high seasons necessitating long working hours for the employees. The organisation has been able handle this challenge effectively by introducing work schedule and overtime ratings, which acts as motivations to the employees. The overtime ratings pay employees for the extra service they offer to the organisation. Rewarding employees for extra performance is a common feature with this organisation. The HRM department usually conduct survey in various department of the organisation to identify exemplary performance. Once identified the organisation would offer reward that commensurate to the amount of effort the employee offers to the organisation. HRM department should identify pitfalls in an organisation. Motivation is a factor that dictates the outcome of services that employees offer to the clients. A good interpersonal skill is a requirement that employees in the organisation must demonstrate in order to win clients for organisation. It would be difficult for clients of Perkes hotel to believe that the hotel has quality services without demonstration from the organisation’s employees. Human beings respond to issues affecting their lives by demonstrating psychological dissatisfaction. The mood displayed by an employee would automatically persuade clients to come to the hotel or look for other service providers. Perkes hotel employees have demonstrated that they posses the qualifications required for the duties that they offer. This is strength to the organisation because organisation’s functions depend on the ability of the labour force to discharge the anticipated duties. Desired goals of the organization would be a distance far whenever the right qualifications for a given job are hard to meet. Periodic employee training is another strength that the organization has been able to display. Training employees equip them with modern skills introduced in the market. Perkes conduct periodical training of its human resource with a view of enhancing performance of the organisation. Response to employees’ problems is a strength that the organisation has been able to demonstrate. Failure to recognize inability of human beings usually leads to summary dismissal. However, the organization does not harbour any negative feelings against its employees who face changes in the course of discharging their duties. Employee assessment of the organization is very crucial because it influences the quality of work of the organisation. Government requirement provide for assessment programmes, which intend to identify the weaknesses of an employee. For instance, the organization assessment entails major areas, which fail to demonstrate ability of good performance. In most cases, organisations that fail to asses the performance of the employee’s risks losing clients because of the poor services the employees would discharge. Promotion of an employee would be difficult when the organisation cannot identify the ability demonstrated by the employee (Landsbergis, 2009:12). Some employees demonstrate phobia to assessment because they feel the organisation might identify the weaknesses they have thereby resulting into dismissal. Such conditions are common in organizations, but HRM department must indicate that it has the capability to address such challenges. Perkes hotel has weaknesses in its HRM department on how it handles its employees. Human resource management weaknesses usually influence the life of employees. For instance, the organization might decide to suspend its employees on the ground of medical conditions. Employees are human beings that are prone to illnesses. Largely, it is not an individual intention to become ill however, the HRM department of the organization fails to put up with employees who frequent medical institutions. The organization has a limited number of chances that it gives to its employees. The insurance cover of the organisation does not really cater for beneficiary of the employee. Insurance cover is crucial because it influence compensation that an individual is likely to receive in case of an incident. Beneficiaries of an employee face difficulties whenever an employee terminates his or her services. Grappling in harsh conditions is usually common when such incidences occur. The organization fear to incur levies that would increase its operation costs. Many employees feel that the cover should extend to part time employees because the face the same dangers in course of service delivery. An employee would feel dejected when excluded from programmes run by the organisation. This translates to inadequate performance. Welfare programme of the employee is very crucial because it extends to family. For instance, a person who has a family will address family concern alongside the benefits that he or she expects from the organisation. The trend is common because people like displaying human attitude when it comes to issues relating to their families. Recommendation Perkes hotel HRM department should review its insurance cover policy to cater for at least a beneficiary of its employees. The course is important because it would be able to answer to the needs of employees problems in time of need. Restricting the cover to the employee a lone limits the ability of the employee to extend his help to his or her spouse. UK legislation has provisions for corporate services that an organisation should offer to the community. It means that extending its cover to one more individual shall create corporate service benefit to the society. Job termination policy of the organisation should review clauses that restrict employees from seeking more than the created number of permission for medical attention. It is important to note that an illness can prove stubborn for some time then it heals. In such a situation, the employee shall have lost the opportunity to the organisation. Handling human beings entails knowing the complexities that people are likely to face in the society. In addition, humane response promotes the interest of the organisations because it would motivate the employees. In conclusion, HRM management is an interface between the labour union and the organisation. It serves to recruit, assess, promote or reward employees of an organisation. HRM department of Perks hotel has numerous strengths, which illustrates its ability to perform. The strengths include competitive recruitment, satisfactory employee treatment, good employee working condition, and employee training among others.
