?[Your full April 9, Leadership Introduction Leadership is the supremacy to stimulate people bywords, actions and deeds using vision, faith and honesty. Trait theory of leadership presents a set of core traits that are possessed by successful leaders of the world. Acquired needs theory states that a person, who needs power, achievement, and affiliation, will prove to be a successful leader. Trait Theory- Manager 1 (Bob) Bob shows sufficient integrity in his behavior. For example, he conducts regular performance appraisals by reviewing employees’ performance regularly, and giving them sincere feedback. He has enough self-esteem in that he believes in his ideas and capabilities. For example, he is able to stick to his decisions, without letting others overpower him. He is extremely intelligent in understanding situations and acting accordingly. For example, he quickly understands conflicts and reaches the best solution. However, he is not extraverted. This enables him to maintain a distance between him and employees. For example, he does not attend parties that employees throw at their homes. He has enough conscientiousness. He is very considerate toward ethical and legal issues of a situation. For example, he always pays salaries in time. Bob is not open to experience. He is shy of trying new things. For example, he sticks to his technique of communicating face-to-face with employees rather than trying video conferencing. Trait Theory- Manager 2 (Ronald) Ronald is deficient in integrity in that he does not bother about sticking to principles. For example, he is in a relationship with a female coworker, when workplace relationships are prohibited in the company. He lacks self-esteem because he does not care about how others judge him. For example, he was caught dating on site, but showed no regrets, and continued dating. However, he is extremely intelligent in understanding the nature of problems. For example, he resolved a conflict between two employees without the need for a mediating party. Ronald is an extravert, and is interested in socializing. For example, he is the one everyone looks for when a party has to be arranged on site. He is not conscientious at all. He does not give attention to ethical considerations. For example, he has been charged due to having involved in gender discrimination. He is open to experience. He is imaginative, and is not concerned about what people think of him. For example, he tries new ways of conflict resolution rather than sticking to older ones. Acquired Needs Theory- Manager 1 Bob shows his need to become authoritative, powerful, and influential. For example, he wants to make his voice heard in front of opposition, and wants to be given value. He is very much achievement oriented. He seeks to achieve his goals through hard work and endurance. He looks forward to upward progress in his job. For example, he becomes happy when he accomplishes a milestone within deadline. Bob also needs affiliation in that he tries to develop friendly work relations, despite being an introvert. He urges to keep workplace environment happy. For example, he regularly calls all employees individually to himself, listens to their work and family problems, and tries to solve them. Acquired Needs Theory- Manager 2 Ronald is power-oriented. He shows his need to be powerful by taking charge of teams. He shows authority while resolving conflicts. For example, once resolving a conflict between two parties, he presented his solution, and forced the parties to accept it. However, he does not seem to be focused on achievement. He does not seem to wish for upward progress. For example, he does not care about deadlines, and is often asking for new ones from the customers. He, also, does not need affiliation. He does not try to foster healthy relationships with labor. Although he is an extravert, yet he is not very liked among lower class workers, like canteen boys and sweepers. For example, he is often found yelling at the peon. Summary: Manager 1 Trait Theory Bob is sufficient in integrity, self-esteem, intelligence, and conscientiousness, but is deficient in extraversion and openness to experience. This make us give him a score of 4 out of 6. Acquired Needs Theory Bob needs power, achievement, and affiliation. He wants to be powerful, focuses on accomplishments, and develops friendly relations at work. This makes us give him a score of 3 out of 3. Leadership Bob possesses most of the skills that are required to become a successful leader. This is because he possesses integrity, and is self-confident, wise, and ethical. He sets goals and tries to achieve them well in time. He strives to make his performance better. Summary: Manager 2 Trait Theory Ronald is sufficient in intelligence, extraversion, and openness to experience, but is deficient in integrity, self-esteem, and conscientiousness. This makes us give him a score of 3 out of 6. Acquired Needs Theory Ronald needs power, but does not focus on achievement and affiliation. This makes us give him a score of 1 out of 3. Leadership Unfortunately, Ronald does not possess enough skills that are required to make him a good leader. He can never be a good leader because he lacks integrity and self-respect, and does not follow ethics. Also, he does not care for achievement of goals. Training and Development Recommendations Bob needs training in social skills, since he is an introvert. His need for affiliation can be a helping factor for him. Also, he needs to be open to experience through trying out new things, like new technological tools, and new ideas. As for Ronald, he needs to develop self-esteem and conscientiousness through giving consideration to ethical guidelines of the workplace. Also, he should focus on achievement of goals, and should try to maintain good relationships with all classes of workforce. His extraversion can be a helping factor for him in this regard. Summary This paper compared two managers, Bob and Ronald, on the basis of Traits theory and Acquired needs theory. Bob comes out to be a better manager because he possesses most of the skills that are required of a successful leader. Ronald has not proven to be a good manager, and lacks skills that can make him a good leader. Bob has better personality traits that Ronald, and is more focused on motivational needs as compared to Ronald. Read More
