In Syria, the United s is learning the lessons of inaction By Gerson, Michael. Washington Post Introduction: The Syrian Crisis is one of the most challenging ones faced by the world community. Syria is at present in the throes of civil war and at present there is no visible and near end to the onslaught and barbaric actions that are being observed. The role of Western world and the United States of America is cut on in this regard and they have tough decisions to make in times ahead in order to bring peace in the country. It has been center of attraction and attention for the global press agencies. This paper takes into account the two front runner news agencies namely Washington post and Al Jazeera and analyzes their views and opinion expressed in a particular article published on a day. Political and international significance: Although the Syrian crisis is a domestic affair, yet they have an impact on the global peace and stability. It is based on the fact that international players are dragged into it. China, Russia and Iran stand on one side, while the Western World and United States of America, Turkey and Saudi Arabia have held their ground strong on the other side. The former have advocated smooth transition without interference of the foreign elements and countries, the latter have called for joint intervention which would not only bring about an end to the hostilities and the war at hand, but also the end to the regime and days of Bashar Al Assad who is long hated for his policies and views towards West and its allies in the Middle East. The role of West, United Nations and United States of America has been ridiculed and subjected to large amount of criticism. It has been done so on the account of inability to take a concrete step that would stop the overall bloodshed and bring an ultimate end to the sufferings of the common men. The other needs that have indirectly been stressed for include the demand for a more effective U.N and U.S collaborative strategy. With Syria’s regime going on rampage and initiating offensives against its own citizens, the need has been stressed for going about and defusing the chemical arsenal that is possessed by Bashar Al Asad. It is being termed as the stockpile that has enabled the incumbent going all guns against the rivals. The editorials are often termed as the creator of public opinion. They provide an insight into the different domains and angles of various cases and thereby force the masses into thinking and enticing the government into taking the actions. The two articles being used for study serve the same purpose. Seeing the inability of the American government and subsequent damage done as a result if it with regard to human rights violation and overall peace and stability imbalance in the region. Based on this, Gerson feels the need for stressing upon the government and taking a concrete action against the Syrian regime. Description of the first article: The first article that has been taken for observation and study is from Washington post. It is written by Michael Gerson. It gives an insight into the overall Syrian Crisis and also the global dynamics which have been associated to and dotted through the analogy deduction. The article also sheds light upon the options available for Barack Obama’s administration, the possible missed opportunities and the potential future prospects which if are adopted, would enable finding the solution to the nearly three years plus standoff. Views about the first article: The first article fulfills the demands and requirements of a standardized article. All the information provided has historic precedence, is accurate and is prepared and presented in a co relating manner. The author has aimed at drawing attention to his claim through the past experiences and the present threats faced in the face of the prevailing civil war in Syria. The news citing sources that can be extracted from the paper include the study and analysis of the previous similar efforts and wars that have been fought. This along with the investigative and intense study of the scenario and circumstances in the international context makes it overall more effective. The overall nature of the article is episodic, event covering as well as through provoking and stresses for breaking the shackles and taking substantive action towards resolving and eliminating the status quo which has led to the large number of casualties(Gerson). Overview and dissection of the article: The article has addressed the lack of ability of the Obama Administration with regard to taking a concrete action against Bashar Al Assad Regime. Gerson has further highlighted the factors that have come forth as a result of the lack of ability of Americans on the foreign policy front with regard to a concrete action against Syria. International connection establishment: The author has aimed at co relating the situation in two parts of the world. One is that of Syria and other is of Ukraine. The two are compared with regard to the desire for equipping itself with the nuclear material. The article also draws attention to the bigger states and their influences in the respective states. He has given example of Ukraine that has seen a recent takeover by Russia over its state Crimea. In the same manner, it is being feared that although Syria does not see any threats of annexation, yet it is being used to influence by the other nations. The usage and manipulation is visible with the events and accounts of global powers spilt over its existence. The case of veto with regard to the further action on Syria was one major event in this regard which proved how divided and split the world community stood split about Syrian crisis and the potential future to resolution of the problem. Russian connection: The author in another angle and dimension aims at hitting upon the Russian connection in a direct and indirect manner. In the direct manner ,it is the vetoing of the resolution put forward with regard to the foreign intervention in Syria, the indirect support and assistance for Syria came about in the form of military alliance and other defense equipments providing to Syria in the times when it is confronted with the battle within and the rebels have been targeting their reach to Damascus. AL Jazeera article: Title: . Syria: Another case of Western meddling Author : Nekrassov, Alexander The article was published on March 18th 2014. It was in response to the build up and the progress towards a possible break down in the three years plus stalemate that has led to massive bloodshed. The author of the article is Alexander Nekrassov. Alexander has shown complete hopelessness on account of the recent progress that has been made. To him, if this is the manner in which the progress is going to continue, the overall Civil War that has plagued the Syrian streets and towns would go on to continue for a time that is far longer than the global community may desire it to last. Alexander has drawn an analogy of the civil war with the ones that were fought in the middle of 20th century and were relatively long lasting ones. One of the examples set forth in this regard is that of Lebanon. Lebanon was marred by a similar feet of barbarity and jingoism within and was in the throes of civil war for as long as a decade and a half and it lasted from 1975 to 1990. The Syrian war only in its fourth year might get to see a similar precedence if it is not handled in a different manner from the presently undertaken manner which has hardly provided any gains from the already strangled situation and scenario. Recently the two sides, the rebels and government groups have come to table after a long impasse and the first round was conducted in Geneva. The first round ended up without extracting any substantive outcome and output. The 2nd round was undertaken in the same manner and was named as Geneva Round 2 of the dialogue process. Alexander in his article has ridiculed the progress and process and has stated that if the current rate of progress was to go on in show, there might be Geneva 3, Geneva 4 and so on without any concrete output and the war would go on to extend into years forward. The article targets the overall world community in general. It warns them in the same tone and expresses the desire for bringing about the end to the ongoing conflict. This article, like the previously compared and studied article of Washington Post newspaper fulfills all the requirements of the internationally approved and standardized article. It stresses upon the facts based on historic precedence and other events of similar account. The sources cited are those of the recent global affairs, the historic study of the events of similar nature. The mention of the civil war that was fought in Lebanon between 1975 and 1990 is another reference of how the author has taken into account the past events. From the study of both the articles it can be assessed that a general perception prevails amongst the global writers and readers with regard to the helpless state of existence of the super power. The standing of the United Nations organization is also subjected to criticism in both the articles. The highhandedness of the Bashar Al Assad is directly exposed through the mention of the events and incidents that have taken place and the notable mention of the human rights violation have also been set forth against it. What made the articles good? The sympathetic touch added to entire work, the mention of the facts such as the amount of causalities suffered and the cries that are every day heard in the streets of Damascus made the article more appealing. The overall quality of the paper is up to the requirements of a professionally written article. It covers all the aspects of the story. It sheds light into all the dimensions of the case at hand. The winners are the powerful people and those who have prevented the action that is necessary to be taken against Bashar Al Assad regime. The opinion makers and the think tanks are the winners in this regard. The rebels group who make up for the second part of the conflict are the losers since they do not have access to the direct media sources or the international coverage and reporting agencies. The role of Russia has been criticized for having manipulated the terms and conditions of the different places in the world. Although not specifically mentioned, but the writer aims at highlighting the relationship between the role of Russia in the Cold war days era and one that it has undertaken presently. An explicit stand has been taken regarding the issue at hand and the overall approach of the West and other decision makers has been lambasted .The second article, like the first one is an event driven article. The broader context and concept of human rights violation and an immediate need for global intervention has been stressed. In both the cases it has been stressed that a move guided by the United nations charter must be adopted for the purpose of resolution of the three year long conflict. The further delay in the resolution would lead to further human rights violation. With the overall amount of killings having already exceeded one hundred thousand figure, these figures may sore up by higher proportions in times ahead if the problem is not handled properly and on immediate basis. Both the articles are sufficiently equipped to provide the readers with an insight in to the prevailing situation and circumstances. They would provide the necessary information that is required to understand the ground situation. Both articles meet the requirement of updated reporting, standardized working and international publication rules and regulations that are set forth and demanded for against a top quality paper which goes online and is read all over the world.
