Places The following is a brief introduction into the war history of Malta (All cited from the GoogleEarth mashup file National War Museum: This museum holds a massive history of Malta’s involvement of World War I and World War II. It also holds the original George Cross of George VI (1942). Fort St. Elmo: This fort originated in 1533 to protect the city from naval attack. It is the location of the four month battle during the Ottoman Siege of Malta (1565). Casta Rocca Piccola: This museum is housed in the former home of Nicholas de Piro. It maintains bomb shelters underground that were built during World War II. Great Siege of Malta: This is an exhibit located within the Republic Square. It demonstrates the Siege of Malta (1565) where the Ottoman Empire was unsuccessful in capturing the island of Malta. Knights Hospitallers Embassy: This is a location in Valletta that upholds the ideals of the Knights of St. John. It maintains diplomatic relationships with over 104 countries. The Siege Bell Monument: This is a massive monument that was awarded to the Maltese People after their efforts during World War II. It was given to recognize the events of the Siege of Malta. Lascaris War Rooms: This was the Britain headquarters location during World War II. It was created underground 400 to offset the attack of German and Italian aircrafts. This is the same location where General General Eisenhower and Marshal Montgomery orchestrated their attacks on Sicily. RAF Memorial: This is a monument awarded the almost 2,300 men who died defending the Mediterranean and Malta. It is a substitute for grave sites that have never been established. City Gate: This is the main entrance to the walled city of Valletta. It has been rebuilt more than three times, most recently in 1964 by Renzo Piano. Upper Barracca Gardens: This site was the location where defense was put up for Grand Harbour. This location was where ceremonies would take place for war victories. In the past it would fire off canons at noon for all ships to track time. There is currently an active canon on the site that demonstrates the same each day. Sacra Imfermeria: This location was built during the 16th century to serve as a military hospital for the Knights of St. John. It was recognized as the best hospital in Europe up through the end of World War I. It was later turned into a conference center. St. George’s Square: This location was the center of rule for Britain between 1800 and 1964. It was the siege of this location that marked the alliance of the Britain with the Maltese to rebel against French power. Grand Master’s Palace: The founder la Vallette’s nephew constructed this building in 1571. This place houses a statue of Neptune and an armory museum for Malta that has artifacts beginning with the Knights of St. John.
