Download file to see previous pages He is also credited with being one of the pioneers of a new form of painting that became popular in Europe in the second half of the twentieth century.
Most of his paintings depict his chosen medium, which he sought to explore different forms of art in the early 1960’s. The painting of enlarged copies of black-and-white photographs that only encompassed the use of different shades of grey such as the 1964 picture cow and the 1965 picture kitchen chair catapulted him to fame. This is because he started a new form of using photographs as a starting point rather than a model towards an end in itself. He states that he blurs his images to make everything equal. The aim is to depict images as both equally equal and equally unequal without distorting the intended message. This is shown best in the illustration below.
