(Hawthorne, 183)In House of the Seven Gables for example, Hepzibah though unable to make much from her shop, she seeks to protect her elder brother who has just been released from prison. Their uncle who is a judge is after their property and lands. The two cousins, Phoebe and Hepzibah work hand in hand to ensure that this does not happen. At some point, the brother and sister leave their house, the Pyncheon family home. This home is the talk of the community and is believed to be under a curse so is their family.
The so called haunted house is guarded by Hepzibah and they do not let the Judge take over their home. Holgrave whose father was killed for being believed to be a witch under the watch of the judge also works to help Phoebe and her cousins to live without trouble from the Judge until his death. Protection is also brought out in the Last of the Mohicans. (Cooper, 324) Magua the Indian, though he seeks to revenge against Colonel Munro, does not kill Cora. He gets sympathetic over the whole forest journey and her please are heard. He keeps her alive. Also, Heyward and Hawkeye work to save the daughters of Munro. Heyward would do anything for Alice. He pretends to be one among the Indian community to save Alice from where she is kept separately by Magua.
Uncas, an Indian whose love for Cora and hers for him is forbidden, risks his life to save Cora. Although at the end they both die, he stops at nothing to save her. He pursues Magua and flees even after being caught. Through the help of Hawkeye and Heyward, Uncas pursues Magua to save Cora.
