The author has provided insight into the union’s problems and the issues that threatened its unity.   This book describes issues concerning the problems that immigrants encountered upon entering the country along with the different rights that have been accorded to the people. The cultural clashes that occurred when various people were settling on the western prairies, on their great plains and the activities of the populist movements have also been described by the author. This book differs from the book by Conlin since it describes how the new industrial period came into being, and the expansion of American industries, railroads, and labor markets. Like the book by Conlin, this book provides some insight into the social and cultural issues affecting the American people during the 20th century but adds a lot more information. It provides additional information concerning science, urban life, the country’s expansion of its public education systems, and the introduction of mass cultures. Castillo speaks of the progressive era that the country got into under the leadership of presidents like Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson. This is unlike Conlin who greatly talks about and admires President Jefferson and his impact on the country’s history. Castillo provides additional information on the issues of imperialism in America, its causes along with its effects (2000).   The earlier war that Castillo speaks about in the book is the war fought between the Spaniards and the Americans. In more recent times, he provides details on the First and second world wars, the great economic depression of the 1920s, the cold war and its effects, and the War in Vietnam. Finally, Castillo has provided information concerning the status of America in the current global and its economic and technological achievements.
