Why Electoral College Should be Illuminated - Essay Example

The President and Vice President are elected by the people who are previously chosen on a state-by-state basis or by the citizens. The group of voters during Presidential elections consists of 435 electors appointed by the states, (their number is determined by the number of Congress members), 3 electors from the District of Columbia, and 100 senators. Only they can take part in Presidential elections. This fact makes the issue rather complicated as it appears that to have a right to vote for the President you should first be elected by the citizens.

There are three political directions in the United States: Republicans, Democrats, and Libertarians. Republicans have democratic views, but they still value the government very high, while Democrats give the reins to government. Liberians state that a person should be independent and do what he/ she wants if he does not violate the law. They do not recognize the excessive interference of the government in the market economy. If an individual wants to be independent he/she does not vote for a party, but votes for a separate person. A great number of citizens prefer to be independent and do not want to share the interests of this or that political party. That is why more and more people state that the presence of the Electoral College makes The United States less democratic. I share these views. The most developed country in the world, which propagates democracy as the foundation of its high position and success should allow all the citizens of the country to take a part in their future President and Vice President Elections. Our President should be elected by all the citizens as “by the people for the people”.

Certainly, Electoral College is historically created, has always been applied and its abolishment will be connected with many difficulties: “getting rid of the Electoral College would require a constitutional amendment. Amending the constitution is (by design) an exceptionally difficult process requiring not only 2/3 majorities of both houses of Congress but also by the legislatures of 3/4 of the states. Even in 1788, the Founding Fathers knew that politicians often made outrageous promises.…. The Founding Fathers well understood that political slogans like this should not find their way into the constitution too easily, so they made the process very difficult. Changing the Electoral College system will not be easy” (The Electoral College). However, I am sure that the vote of every citizen still must be taken into account when selecting a President.
