He also served as a Commander task Force 59 in the evacuation of American citizens from Lebanon. In 2006, Carl B. Jensen was nominated for the position of Brigadier General to the rank of Major General. He has taken part in the Desert Shield and the Operation Iraqi Freedom battles. He became the deputy Commander of the U.S. Marine Corps Forces in 2007 and later was appointed to be the commander of the Marine Corps Installations East, a position he holds up to date. During his years of service, Carl has received various awards some of which include the Defense Superior Service Medal and the Legion of Merit award.
The various positions held by Carl B. Jensen shows that he has a considerable amount of information on the security departments of the U.S. especially those that deal with the Marine Sector. This means that his book, Stories that have changed America, has relevant details for anybody who wants to understand how the American government operates to make sure that the country and its citizens are safe. His use of simple language on very complex matters makes it easier for the reader to easily relate to the details offered in the book and understand it better.
Carl has also offered comprehensive information on the stories of many people who have all contributed in one way or another to the existence of the U.S. as it is now. The thesis of this book, Stories that changed America, is a simple statement that stands to prove that a pen is mightier than a sword. According to Carl B. Jensen, life in the 21st century in the U.S. has been made easier by the words written by a group of courageous writers who wrote about the events that were taking place in the U.S. which they believed were causing nothing but harm to the nation.
President Theodore Roosevelt referred to them as “muckrakers” because of their determination to expose the corruption that went on in the government (Jensen, 2000 p. 45). He was not very pleased with their job and tried to stop them but in the end, he lost and a lot of government stories were sold out to the world. The book aims at describing the fact that it is not necessary for someone to be in power for them to make changes in the world. Carl tells the stories of 21 authors whose stories had a major impact on the country of the U.S.A.
and they caused tremendous changes that are felt up to date. Carl tries to explain his thesis by also giving a brief history of how life in the 19th century was like for the people of America. A group of rich and corrupt leaders were in charge of running so many businesses in the country but it was all for their own benefit. This group was referred to as the Robber Barons. Its actions led to the disintegration of the society as they were coupled by child labor, civil rights violations and electoral fraud2.
It took great courage for the authors and journalist of that time to stand up for the nation and choose to expose what was going on in the nation. Although they lacked the power and influence conferred by wealth, in this case the “sword,” they dedicated their lives to doing what they believed was right for their nation by exposing the greed and corruption of both businessmen and politicians (Jensen, 2000 p .32). One of the writers that Carl talks about is Rachel Cason, who was a writer, scientist and
