Key events in the war are described with remarkable detail. One such event that captured my admiration was the description of the evacuation of Washington from New York. Shaara gives an efficient account of American military history; this is illustrated by the mode with which he analyzes the battles and the leaders of the war. The principle characters of his book are: George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Dan Morgan, Nathaniel Hale, General Benedict Arnold, Nathaniel Greene and the British General Lord Cornwallis.

Review A reader looking for a book filled with dramatic inspiration will not be too amused by this book. This arises from the fact that it tends to read be structured as a text book laden with conversations. However, this is not to brand the book as boring. It does in-fact have some scenes that are laden with dramatic prowess. This is exemplified by his recount of the march from Head of Elk. He describes how this was undertaken amidst relentless rain. Scenes of this nature are thus present throughout the entirety of the book.

The book is perfect for the reader interested in American history. The explanations and recounts of the revolutionary war are told in a straight forward and mechanical manner. Shaara just does not endeavour to just inform the reader of this event rather, he shows the reader the event. Taking all factors into consideration, this is a well written historical book. The fact that this is the second volume of Jeff Shaara’s two part story, of his elucidation of American Revolution, it persuades the reader to explore the intricacies of American evolution that is highlighted in his first volume.

The book focuses on the major characters of the historical plot. These main characters are George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, Dan Morgan, Nathaniel Hale, General Benedict Arnold, Nathaniel Greene and the British General Lord Cornwallis (67). This volume illuminates on the facts behind the war for the American independence. The obstacles to realization of American freedom are also addressed. This is rather momentous given the fact that these obstacles have gone much unnoticed and underappreciated.

The behaviour of people treating history as a distant element in their lives has significantly led to this state. The framework of the book is accurate within historical accuracy. As such, it is not laden with ill conceived ideologies that often characterise books of historical fiction. Jeff Shaara endeavours to at times expound, or rather speculate, on the motives, emotions that characterised the actions of these principle characters. Conclusion This is a fascinating story for any reader with the slightest interest in the origin of America as a free nation state.

Jeff Shaara goes to an extra mile to elucidate on the lives individuals who withstood hardships and in the end managed victorious against British imperialism. It is important to note that, this book is not merely a account of the six year struggle for American independence.
