Obstacles that Hinder the Adoption of the ICD10AM in KAMC-Jeddah - Case Study Example

Results: The main obstacles that hinder adoption of ICD-10AM at KAMC include the level of acquaintance (75%), the frequency of use where only 11.1% always uses ICD-10AM, the training skills (87.5%), and the awareness of policies and procedures (83.3%). Physicians and coders lack the required training skills to handle and use ICD-10AM, are not well acquainted with ICD-10AM and do not use it frequently, and are not aware of the policies and procedures of ICD-10AM.Conclusion: Generally, various obstacles hinder the successful adoption of ICD-10AM at KAMC.

The obstacles can be eliminated by training all healthcare professionals who handle data at KAMC on ICD-10AM, educating them on the system importance to familiarize them with it, and setting up policies and procedures on the usage of ICD-10AM.Hospitals and other healthcare facilities collect and produce a large amount of data. The data collected about patients is an important source for creating information and knowledge. Therefore, the data accessibility, capturing, and storing data about patients facilitates varied and broad data uses within healthcare providers (Ghali et al. 2006). The use of a standard system for coding diagnoses such as the “International Classification of Diseases (ICD)” is an example of a system that enables efficient data capturing and utilization concerning healthcare services (Roberts & Luxford, 1997).

Implementation of ICD-10AM comes with numerous benefits in healthcare services. ICD-10 allows the capturing of additional and richer clinical data. It also ensures the reliability and validity of coded health data. However, implementing ICD-10 is hindered by various challenges. For instance, when a healthcare facility adopts ICD-10, several set methodological tools pertinent to ICD-9 or ICD-9-CM are supposed to be revamped to be applicable in ICD-10 (Topaz, Shafran & Bowlesopaz, 2013). Also, because all countries license the coding system independently from the World Health Organization and each country can create its own adjustments, variations can occur between countries (Murphy et al, 2010).
