It is mostly provided in order to reduce the chances of complications in case of an accident and to offer emotional comfort to the victims. It is also performed in order to decrease the pain and suffering an individual may be going through before any professional health givers arrive at the scene of the accident. First aid is performed using little available supplies. First aid is universal and it comprises of the many concepts of quick assessment of situations and the interventions required. Once first aid is offered, it should not be a reason to postpone any treatment with the required professional medics. Once an accident happens or an individual is in need of first aid, the provider of the aid should take care of themselves and ensure they do not get hurt in the process of providing the aid services. The provider of the aid is referred to as the first aider. The first aider should ensure that they put on the required protection kit which comprises of gloves and masks. In order to perform first aid, the first aider will require a first aid kit. The first aid kit is a kit stocked with items which will be required in helping a victim. In order for the kit to be of help during an emergency, it should be fully stocked and restocked regularly to replace any items that may be expired or not working properly. It should also be stored in a location where it will be easy to retrieve in case of any emergency. First aid kits can be purchased at local drug stores or alternatively, an individual can assemble one on their own by purchasing the contents of the kit separately and compiling them together to form a first aid kit. Lesson Plan A lesson plan is an instructor’s map on what the students should and will learn and how the learning can be done effectively in the class. Before planning any lesson, the instructor will have to identify the objectives that they plan to achieve once the classes are over. From there, the instructor will now be able to acquire and develop strategies which will help him achieve these objectives. For a lesson plan to be successful, it must incorporate three key components. The first one is the objectives for student learning. For the first aid lesson plan, the objectives will include the identification of first aid kit tools, explain the importance of CPR, explain the Heimlich Maneuver method, demonstrate the ability to use the kit and demonstrate the performance of CPR. The lesson plan should also contain a time frame. This will include the number of hours and days the lessons will take place and should be done by what date. In the current first aid lesson plan, this is clearly shown as days and how many hours each session is to take in order to give time for understanding and also for achieving the required objectives. The instructor will have to estimate how much time each activity will take and also allow for questions at the end of the class. Every lesson plan should contain a strategy which will allow the instructor know if the students understood the concepts being taught. This will include asking specific questions and setting review questions. This will also help the first aid student to know what they still haven’t grasped and be keen on these topics. This will also enable the supervisors to know which students will need more training in the first aid lesson to avoid any injuries in the field. The final stage of creating a lesson plan is to provide a layout to the student on what they will be learning. This will involve notifying the students of the topics to be covered on the different lessons which include the learning basics to first aid and performing basic first aid. Training Design When it comes to first aid training, there is the combination of both theory and practical lessons in order to acquire and generate confidence in the first aiders. Every first aider has to know the importance of owning a first aid kit and how to use one. The first aid kit will help the first aider to handle minor emergencies. It should however be kept far from little children. The first aid kit has many items in it but there are some supplies that must be present for it to work. These include the bandages, latex gloves, scissors, hand sanitizer, pain killers and a list of emergency numbers. These are some of the most basic and important items in a first aid kit. This however does not mean that the other items are not important. The first-aiders are taught about the importance of the items in the first aid kit and how they are to be used during emergencies or when they are required (Family Doctor, 2010) says that when compiling a custom first aid kit, the first-aid are advised to take into consideration any personal allergies and diseases that the relatives and family members may have. First-aiders are taught on the importance of Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). Research shows that the victims of an accident have a double chance of surviving if they are given CPR immediately. It is however unfortunate that most of the members of the public lack these life-saving skills. The chances of survival for a victim suffering from a heart attack are greatest if CPR is administered. There are however problems of the first aiders not being confident enough and tend to be afraid of administering CPR for fear of doing it wrong. It is important to however know that bad CPR is still worse than no CPR at all. First-aiders are also educating on the importance of conducting the Heimlich maneuver method.(Dr. Henry Heimlich,1947) says that the Heimlich maneuver is the emergency procedure which involves removing a foreign object which may be lodged in a victim’s airway and in a way hinder the breathing of the individual. This condition causes thousands of deaths in both adults and children. The food or foreign object blocks the wind pipe which makes it difficult for breathing and if the trachea is not opened, death follows shortly. Dr. Henry Heimlich invented the technique which is used to expel the foreign materials that are blocking the wind pipe. It is now a standard part in any first aid classes and courses. The main theory behind the maneuver is that once pressure is exerted on the abdomen just below the diaphragm, air forces out the object causing the obstruction. When undergoing first aid training, another major lesson is how to perform CPR on a victim. CPR consists of applying pressure on the chest rhythmically says (The Emergency Manual, 2008). These are called chest compressions and rescuer breaths. During the event of an accident and a victim requires CPR, there are different steps which are involved. The person should first be laid on their back. Then the airways should be opened to enable breathing. If after opening the airways the victim does not breath normally, it will prompt the first aider to provide chest compressions which will bring back the breathing process. It is advisable to call the emergency numbers immediately and continue giving chest compressions. The first aider should give five more cycles of first aid. This will include 30 chest compressions and two mouth to mouth breaths. These mouth breaths should be given rhythmically after every 30 chest compressions. When the victim is an infant, less force and pressure is used to avoid further damaging the infant’s lungs. Training Evaluation After every session and learning course, there is always a training evaluation to determine the amount of knowledge which may have been gained and understood by the first aiders. In this case, the instructor provided a group of questions in the form of an evaluation checklist which would enable them to evaluate the first aiders adequately. In the checklist evaluation, the instructor wishes to know if the first aiders can easily identify and explain the first aid kit tools. The tools in the first aid kit all have a different purpose and are for doing different things. This will enable the first aider to gain knowledge on what item to use at what time and for what purpose. When it comes to medical drugs, which include the painkillers and the relievers, the first aider should know which painkillers to use since there are different types of painkillers. The aspirin based and the non-aspirin based pain killers. For first aiders who do not know how to handle the equipment, they might end up causing bigger problems to the victims and themselves. A first aider must always know how to use the latex gloves to ensure that they do not contaminate the victims’ blood exposing them to infections and to also protect themselves from getting into contact with the victims’ blood and getting infected with any ailment that the victim may be carrying. The first aider must also be able to explain the importance of CPR from that they learn in the first aid training. The main function of CPR is to provide the body’s most important parts with blood rich in oxygen even after the victim is unconscious.(Bronwyn Ellison, 2012) says that when a person is not breathing, the body organs of his body are not receiving the required amounts of oxygen and this may lead to permanent damage of the brain after only four minutes. In the absence of a pulse, the chest compressions will provide the body with blood. This will enable blood circulation through the body organs and prevent organ failure. The other function of CPR is to ensure that oxygen reaches the lungs and the blood. This is possible through the rescue breathing. Rescue breathing comprises of activities such as the mouth to mouth procedure. This will ensure that air rich in oxygen reaches the lungs and finally the body organs through the blood even with the absence of the normal breathing. When it comes to the Heimlich maneuver, every first aider should know how to perform it and perform it properly and effectively. This maneuver is mainly used to help chocking victims who may have been victims of food chocking or object obstruction in their trachea. The main importance of the Heimlich maneuver is to clear the air passages to enable for normal breathing to take place. There are different cases of chocking and obstruction. When a victim can cough or talk, the wind pipe is not completely blocked but the Heimlich maneuver must be employed in order to relieve the victim off the pain and frustration. There are instances in which the victim can neither talk nor cough. In such instances, there is completely no air flow in the lungs. This means that the victim completely lacks air in the lungs and can lead to permanent damages if not attended to immediately. The Heimlich maneuver will be used to clear the air ways completely and remove the object that is causing the obstruction. There are very many cases of chocking which happen during our day to day activities. These cases may cause the loss of many lives if nothing is done to the victims. The Heimlich maneuver is very important not only for the first aiders to learn but also for the normal members of the public. Conclusion Some of the first aid procedures which are carried out on the victims may cause damage to internal organs. This is why it is not advisable to carry out these procedures if the victims are not in real danger. This may cause damage and major illnesses which can even lead to organ failure of breaking of bones.(St John Ambulance, 2007) advices, that everybody should try and learn basic first aid procedures and techniques. This is because you may never know when you will need them since accident occur daily and cannot be predicted. It may be a major accident or a minor accident but the administration of first aid may be the cause of saving a life or losing a life. In order for the first aiders to be completely comfortable with their acquired skills on first aid, they are advised to make plenty of practice and training.
