After completing and graduating to become a surgeon, I would also want to assist in lip surgery in thirdworld countries especially Africa. Currently as a student I have this urge to help people, and it is challenging trying to do any other tasks as in my final year of college, and it’s overwhelming. It is one of the roles I hope to achieve once am done with school. The challenge I will encounter is trying to transfer my skill there without having to travel and also fulfilling my obligation here. There is also the lack of proper qualified team and equipment in the country I want to practice to be precise Liberia. Though, I believe in finding a way and helping the needy to make the world a better place. Recruiting qualified doctors who can learn how to do this in Liberia and also understand how I can find equipments to send so they can help in proper diagnosis. The number of my team needs to be relatively little, and we need to build a good relationship because ninety percent of my team and communication will be done online. There is also the need to ensure there are self-motivated and can work under no supervision. Therefore, with this in mind I launch a recruitment drive to volunteers in Liberia, and they must be qualified doctors and having practiced for more than five years. The reason I need somebody who has practiced is first to know they have already experienced the medical world and know the challenges that come with this field. Second being a corporate social responsibility for people born with dented lips, financing is a constraint that I will have to minimize so as to maximize the results. Recruiting a volunteer is someone who understands that his/her role is not to gain profit but to make a change in the society. Therefore I will attract honest, understanding and humble professionals. The team I will be recruiting needs to have seen the need for this operation in their country as this will help them to be able to work more aggressively and stay committed to this cause. I will need a team of four doctors preferably two of each gender. They will sacrifice their time for three months to come to The States for more training. Here I will be able to see how they work and whether they are capable to work in this field. The attributes I will not compromise are they should be keen to every detail. Are they focused and understand time management? The other important things are they should be quick to learn and also do they know how to deal with pressure. To understand this I will work with them for the next three months at their cost, and this will help me understand who really would want to work and how do they view this cause. The roles are different as I would prefer only two to be running the operation while one will have to be online communicating with me during the whole operation in case of any question I would be responding promptly. The other role is about selecting the patients to be operated due to financing as a challenge we will only be operating fifty patients a month and therefore we will have to consider the level, how severe the lips are? The financial background of the patients, so if they are financially sound, we would not operate on them as they can seek medical care. Our core objective is to help those who cannot afford to pay the restructuring a chance to smile without having a financial burden. The last role will be someone who will raise awareness in the media and also seek for sponsors. Therefore I will need someone experienced in marketing and who can use social media platforms to spread the word for this cause. The next part after of the training is choosing the right location once they go back to Liberia where the hospital will be set up. As we are well aware, third world countries have an immense challenge in electricity and internet, and this are very crucial for our service. The operation will always be through teleconferencing from me here. Therefore lacking these two services will actually affect the entire process and might even bring it to a halt. The cost of exporting the equipment will be catered by my organization. This is where the role of one of the doctors which is seeking sponsors, will have to visit hospitals in Liberia to see if there is anyone who will partner with us. Building a hospital from scratch is costly and also takes a lot of time. This project is estimated to take five years, and they will only have three months to set up once they go back to Liberia. The selection process will only take a month and it will not be online as most people in Liberia are not computer literate, and they will need to go door to door and sometimes even to different towns to get the people. There should be a clear report and communication to me which will be done through email daily and one video conferencing every Saturday. This is where we will have to understand if everything is going to plan what the challenges are how to overcome them. The best times to conduct this selection will be during school sessions as we will also liaise with teachers to help identify the children’s who have lips problem and be able to give them a chance to show a smile once they are treated. I will be reporting to my organization every month so as to update them and also show them how their help is changing lives thousands of kilometers from home. What actually will determine our success will be the teamwork that we are going to practice, the integrity from our point of recruitment to where we encounter what we can’t achieve. The staff will have to ensure transparency and accountability in Liberia as we don’t want to be seen as opportunists who are trying to take advantage of the situation and make money. Our key role is to ensure we give back to the society with the little we have when we can. Read More
