Research Paper on Pro Enlargement Introduction Pro enlargement is one of the complex medical problems that affect the lives of both aging and aged men. An enlarged prostate is the common problem with many aging and aged men. Alters, Sandra and Wendy says that, “this problem commonly affects men who are above their 50s …” (45). However, having the problem of enlarged prostate does not necessarily mean that you will suffer prostate cancer.People, especially men should understand that prostate enlargement is, a severe problem affecting most men who are above the age of fifty years and emphasize the need of seeking early medical checkups when they witness the symptoms of prostate enlargement occurring. In order to reduce this problem, if one notices any symptoms of prostate enlargement should report the case to a doctor before the situation worsens. This research paper aims at emphasizing the need of acknowledging that prostate enlargement is a complex problem and requires adequate treatment. One solution to reduce the problem of prostate enlargement isthat there is need of educating both aged and aging men about the symptoms and appropriate treatment means of prostate enlargement. Many researches support this position/argument. This is because this is a complex medical problemshighly affecting the health status of most aging and aged men around the globe. For instance, Hodgson states that “prostate enlargement involves costly treatment and thus after the detection of any prostate enlargement symptoms, one is supposed to seek medical assistance with immediate effect” (67). A large number of aging men are currently losing their lives due to prostate enlargement. Alters, Sandra and Wendy says that “educating things such as prostate enlargement ways of treatments and symptoms are very vital to both aged and aging men around the globe since it is affecting large groups of age men currently” (47). With this epidemic causing severe side effects to the health of most men, there is possibility that a large group of men, including the young oneshave an understanding of this killer disease, although most of them seem not to be aware of the symptoms of prostate enlargement and the most appropriate treatment means. For instance, according to Preuss and Brenda, in Canada, prostate cancer is affecting a large group of age and aging men annually. According to these authors, there is need of educating both aged and aging men about the symptoms and appropriate treatment means of prostate enlargement. This is because this is a very complex problem among the aged men and if not well treated can lead to prostate cancer, which is one of the most killer diseases around the globe.Thebook shows the way that prostate enlargement has real life effects on both aging and aged men. It is advantageous for men to be able to detect early symptoms of prostate enlargement.. It is also vital for both aging and aged adults to be able to detect some prostate enlargement symptoms so that they can seek for early necessary treatment before the medical health becomes worse and turns out to be more expensive to cure. This is because once prostate enlargement becomes more critical, it turns out to be more costly to treat and thus people should put in mind that prevention is better than curing. According to McGill University Health Centre, “the most common symptoms of prostate enlargement that men should be able to detect of difficult during urination, decreased urine stream force, and dribbling after urination, and urinating after every few minutes” (4). Additionally, medical officers should emphasize the significance of men being able to manage their body health. The reason is because there are chances of prostate enlargement to cause prostate cancer.Prostate cancer is the second killer disease in the world, causing death to many old men nowadays. Scherer says that another reason why men should be able to detect symptoms of prostate enlargement is that, “ doctors, first wants to know about the initial symptoms that the patient experienced to enable him or her determine the most suitabletesting and types of treatment” (78). Another reason why this research aims at emphasizing the complexes of prostate enlargement is that the patients end up spending large amounts of money to cater this health problem. For instance, Preuss and Brenda explains that, the US National Institutes of Health affirms that prostate enlargement is one of the most costly diseases to cure in the world (58). However, there are a number of treatments that can help relieve prostate enlargement symptoms as well as its illness. Some of the recommended forms of treatments include surgery, medication, and minimal office procedures. The reason why prostate enlargement is commonly a complex problem affecting older men is because the size of a man’s prostate naturally enlarges throughout their lives, but it reaches a size where this enlargement places pressure on the urethra hence causing urinating difficulties as well as bladder issues. The weight of a prostate that exceeds 60 grams is the weight that means that such patient must undergo surgery. Prostate Holmium laser therapy/HoLEP, which has been used since 1998, is sometimes referred to as the most alternative means of prostate enlargement treatment to surgery (Preuss and Brenda 59). This form of treatment is advantageous for patients whose prostates are extremely large and have other risk factors that restrict surgery treatment. Moreover, treating prostates of small size to moderate large size by TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate), which is a surgery that gets rid of some infected parts of the prostate gland, is currently the highly preferred type of prostate enlargement treatment to many patients. However, the disadvantage of using these minimally invasive treatment techniques is that there is a high recurrence rate and need for continuous re-treatment. Several studies about HoLEP demonstrate that there are minimal rates of complications and less need of re-treatment compared to TURP. Scardino and Judith explains, “patients treated using HoLEP treatments also experienced reduced pain and shorter duration to stay in hospital than those who undergo TURP open surgery” (77). They are also able to resume their normal activities within a short duration of time and have few or no sexual negative impacts. According to most researchers, HoLEP is the most effective form of prostate enlargement treatment since it adequately treats almost all sizes of prostate enlargement.Whereas, other forms of prostate enlargement treatment such as Green Light Laser are only effective with small to moderate sizes as the case with TURP and also lacks enough durability. Preuss and Brenda states that, the results of comparing Green Light Laser with other effective treatments such as HoLEP show that they are less effective in treating large size prostates (62). There are several factors that lead to prostate enlargement, which include age, hormone levels, and other factors. The risk of men having enlarged prostate increases with the increase in their age. The more a man gets older, the more the risk of developing prostate enlargement increases. Scherer says, “most men during their 50s will develop the problem of enlarged prostates although not all will see the symptoms of prostate enlargement” (78). Secondly, the balance of body hormone changes as one grows older and this may result to enlarged prostate in older men due to their hormone imbalances. Several studies suggest that men with obesity and those who have diabetes are at a higher risk of developing prostate enlargement. However, doing daily physical exercise can highly help reduce the risk of developing prostate enlargement. However, according to Scardino and Judith , there is need of further researches to determine the cause of prostate enlargement and the appropriate measures of treating and preventing this medical problem (81). Lastly, there are other studies, which state that, one can be at risk of developing prostate enlargement if his brother or father had or have the same condition. However, further researches are needed to confirm this statement. After interviewing a group of ten men with prostate enlargement, their responses clearly supported that prostate enlargement is a complex and the most challenging problems affecting the aged and aging men.The interviewees claimed that this problem is commonly affected men who are above their 50s. Most of them said that they started having this problem when they were at the ages of 50 years and above. However, they supported the notion that, having the problem of enlarged prostate does not necessarily mean that you will suffer prostate cancer since most them have lived under such conditions and have not had issues of prostate cancer. According to Preuss and Brenda, the group of men suggested that people, especially men should understand that prostate enlargement is, a severe problem affecting most men who are above the age of fifty years and emphasize the need of seeking early medical checkups when they witness the symptoms of prostate enlargement occurring (64). According to many doctors, the cause of prostate enlargement remains unknown. However, some researchers suggest that change of hormones plays a vital role in causing this condition to the aging and aged men. Hormones contain powerful chemicals that cause many effects to the body cells hence believed to be the main cause of prostate enlargement. One common theory states that, as men grow, the level of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT) also increase hence stimulating the growth and enlargement of prostate (Preuss and Brenda 63). Another theory suggests that, there are two types of hormones, which trigger enlargement of prostate. These hormones include oestrogen and testosterone. The bodies of young men produce much testosterone and low oestrogen levels. As men grow, the level of testosterone in the body reduces meaning that the body has high oestrogen proportion than testosterone. Alters, Sandra and Wendy suggest that, “higher proportions of oestrogen in the body can lead to prostate enlargement” (50). Additionally, most researches state that most men who have diabetes and high blood pressure are at a higher risk of experiencing prostate enlargement. However, since these two factors, high blood pressure and diabetes, are associate with older men, there happens to be no direct connection between these three conditions. Most men experience a continuous growth of the prostate gland throughout their lives. With most men, this continuous prostate enlargement results to urinary symptoms or blocks the flow of urine. Doctors are not yet sure of the exact cause of prostate enlargement. However, the most significant assumption is that, as a man grows older his body experiences changes in sex hormones’ balance and this may be the reason why the prostate gland enlarges. CA However, there is a group of critics who argues against this notion and states that prostate enlargement is not a complex common problem, which is affecting a large group of aged and aging men. These are mainly a group of people who would claim that there is noenough evidence supporting the notion that prostate enlargement is one of the killer diseases commonly affecting both aged and aging group of men. This group of people would also argue that, prostate enlargement is not common to every man in the community. They state that geographical location, genetic inheritance, and nutrition are among the key factors that influence the occurrence of prostate enlargement. Hodgson states that “there are who claims that prostate enlargement has no relation to prostate cancer” (67). They also argue that prostate enlargement is linked to high intake of fats and history of the family. However, authors like Thompson criticize this group of people by showing that prostate enlargement is a common disease in both aging and aged men who are mainly above 50 years. However, this group of critics should understand that prostate enlargement is one of complex health problems, which highly affects the health conditions of both aged and aging men.It will be a good idea for the medical departments and organizations to start arranging for teaching programs to educate people, especially men on things such as prostate enlargement treatment and symptoms. For instance, Alters and Schiff claim that prostate enlargement occurs due to varying pathological processes and actionscausing a variety of negative impacts to the life of the patients (79). The most appropriate ways of treating prostate enlargement depends on the symptoms of prostate enlargement, whetherthe patienthas other medical complications, and the severity of the symptoms. Although surgery is the most expensive, it is also the most preferred means of treatment by many patients. The age, gland size, and the overall health conditionalso serves as factors for determining the appropriate means of the treatment. Preuss and Brenda states that “the best treatment for men with 50 years may not be appropriate for those with 80 years” (67). Drugs or surgery are the highly recommended treatment for older men while for those below 50 years minimally invasive treatment is preferable. According to the US National Institutes of Health, the best type of prostate enlargement treatment is surgery, although it causes other medical issues than the other forms of treatments. Rebuttal/conclusion According to the findings of the above research, one is able to conclude that, prostate enlargement is a complex common problem, which is affecting a large group of aged and aging men. This research refutes the group of people who claim that prostate enlargement is not a common disease among the aged and aging men arguing against the notion that prostate enlargement is not by any means appropriate to answer the issue “what happens when you get a larger medical problem?” However, this group of critics should understand that, prostate enlargement is one of the commonproblems affecting the health of both aging and aged men and extremely affects their health. The sources used to facilitate the outcome of this research also supports this notionsince most of them are trying to answer the question “what happens when one gets large medical problem?” such as prostate enlargement. For instance, Preuss and Brenda argues that “prostate enlargement is among the killer illnesses among aging and aged men that causes large medical issues in patients” (87). There are also risky chances that prostate enlargement can cause prostate cancer if not treated well or after long term effects. There is need of health departments and organizations to come up with appropriate measures to educate the community about this issue because most of the men are not able to detect the symptoms of prostate enlargement. It until when the issue becomes worse and complicated when most men realize that they have prostate enlargement. Work cited Alters, Sandra, and Wendy Schiff. Essential Concepts for Healthy Living.
