There is a realization that the victims of AIDS are not just the AIDS patients themselves, but also their families, most especially, their children. Just as the AIDS patients also need physical and psychological care, so do their children.  There are however limited programs which address the needs of these children. The programs available are often limited to physical and therapeutic assistance. Group therapy sessions are not greatly explored for its possibilities. Group therapy sessions can potentially be of great assistance to these children because they can minimize feelings of isolation.

Somehow, these children are able to feel that there are other people out there who are going through the same things they are going through. The sense of isolation and belongingness is improved allowing better progress in the therapeutic sessions. In the current global AIDS epidemic, many children are victimized by this disease and they feel the brunt of the physical and psychological effects of this disease. Schools and communities need to step up and make solid strides towards addressing the needs of their needs.

They have to be provided with adequate emotional and physical support in order to ensure that they can adjust well in their current situation as well as safeguard their future plans as adults. HIV/AIDS is one of the fastest rising diseases in the world. The United Nations/World Health Organization latest statistics based on 2008 prevalence rates indicate that there are 33.4 million people living with AIDS with newly infected individuals estimated at 2.7 million (2009). Affected adults based on 2008 statistics represent 31.

3 million of the total AIDS-afflicted population. AIDS-related deaths are also alarming with a total of 2 million in 2008, 1.7 of these being adults, and 280,000 being children (WHO, 2009).
