Goals are SMART: S= specific M=measurable A= achievable R: realistic T = time sensitive Last week, on Thursday 5th of November, I went with my clinical group to the rally which was organized by the students to lower the tuition fees, so that more students can get the opportunity to study and get good jobs in future. This will finally end up in lowering the poverty. We, as a clinical group, advocated in the rally as a nursing students. The goal was to send a clear message to decision makers that lowering the tuition fees will ultimately end the poverty. This was my first opportunity in my life to be part of a rally that is fighting to end poverty in Canada. First I felt little nervous when I saw a huge crowd , but after some time, I started becoming more comfortable .I think it is very important to make government aware of certain issues that can affect the community as a whole. It is very important to voice up together to make government aware that this issue of poverty is one of the most important issues in Canada right now. I think such rallies work as eye openers for government to address the issues. Good: Overall going to rally was a good experience. It was my first opportunity and it helped me to build my confidence and also helped us in achieving our goal as together we could easily increase our pressure on government and build our momentum. Bad: In the rally, they distributed lot of stuff to all the people who were part of the rally, such as T-shirts, clappers, whistles, lots of boards with big signs ”END POVERTY” , small pin signs , scarf, and food. I think that they shouldn’t have wasted so much money on this stuff, especially if we are rallying to end poverty. They could have invested this money for other useful purposes. The Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion (WHO, 1986) identifies prerequisites for health as being peace, shelter, education, food, income, a stable ecosystem, sustainable resources, social justice and equity. Education is part of one of the most important prerequisites Education is also one of the important determinants of health. Education is a right and should be free and accessible to all. Ontario has the second-highest tuition fees in Canada, following Nova Scotia. (Human resources and skills development in Canada, 2002).The benefits of higher educa­tion and skills training range from better employment and a healthier lifestyle, to a better standard of living and greater life satisfaction. Post-secondary education is a necessity for both, individuals and Canadian society at large. Higher average educational attainment across a society is correlated with reduced crime and greater civic engagement. By increasing the financial barriers to post-secondary education, policy-makers are taking great risks with the future prosperity of Canadians. Better education also gives us the opportunity to socialize at broader level. I think this rally gives awareness that how community becomes a part from a border level. Rally demanded from McGuinty government to reinvest in affordable, accessible and high quality post- secondary education, public housing, child care, health care, social assistance, and all other social programmes that help to eliminate poverty. According to Ulloa, Poverty directly harms the health of those with low incomes while income inequality affects the health of all Canadians through the weakening of social infrastructure and the destruction of social cohesion (2005). I think, I did my best to be part of rally and advocated to reduce the poverty in Canada by lowering fees. However, we could address the issue to media and other sources for a better result. S: To address how lowering educational fees benefits the society and achieve lower educational fees in Canada. M: It would be measured as to if the goals of lowering the educational fee is in the hands of the government. A: It would be seen if we can force the government to accept all the demands or not. In my view this target is achievable R:The government has all the necessary sources to fulfill the aim of lowering the prices. T:The time span to achieve this goal is less as more and more individuals want to study and they cannot afford studying. Goals are SMART: S= specific M=measurable A= achievable R: realistic T = time sensitive Last Thursday, we did the trial outreach of Rexdale women centre at Humber college. Main purpose to do the outreach at Humber college was to make students aware about the services of Rexdale women centre and also to look for some other aspects that could help us in our final outreach. I think that trial at Humber college was giving us more insight into people’s response about the Rexdale women centre. I felt that students especially boys were shy to get involved, as they had this misconception that Rexdale women centre is only for abused women. I think outreach at Humber College is effective as a number of international students studying at Humber college might need these services such as English classes, job search programs etc. Good: It was a good experience as many new immigrant students got the opportunity to know about Rexdale women centre services and also cleared the misconception by proving that Rexdale women centre is for families. Doing outreach at Humber also helped us to make the final outreach better. Bad: Although we got a good response at Humber college, but still I felt that it was not as expected. Students did not want to participate and cooperate with us. Most of them either ignored or took it for granted. The Rexdale Womens Centre is an independent, not-for-profit, voluntary agency that serves high-need women and their family members residing in the Greater Toronto Area. As nursing students we could explain the services better with different aspects as all services are meant for the well being of community. Nursing skills and knowledge helped us in developing the awareness about the help that the Rexdale women centre’s services can provide to the people. Especially new immigrants have a lot of stress when they first arrive in Canada, which can directly affect their health. Knowing about different opportunities through Rexdale women is their first step towards success, which can finally lead to a healthy life. I did my best at the outreach by interacting with different people and providing them with right information about Rexdale women centre and cleared any misconceptions about Rexdale women centre. However, lack of seriousness among the students was a major hurdle and it could have been controlled by a more cooperation from the college staff including professors, teachers etc. S:To learn to adjust to different environments such as Rexdale women. M:The goal to understand different environments was achieved and it greatly helped to know about how to act in such an environment. A:The goal of learning things was achievable as by outreaching in Rexdale women a lot of things could be known. R:It is quite realistic to see that we were able to achieve our goals within the limited resources provided to us. Different community centers as such help us nursing students to learn better. T:We have enough time to achieve our goals by going to different community centers and learning more. Goals are SMART: S= specific M=measurable A= achievable R: realistic T = time sensitive After finishing trial outreach at Humber college, our whole group did a meeting next day to discuss the overall performance. After a detailed discussion we started making plans for the final outreach at Albion mall. The plan incorporated any creative ideas to attract more people. Out trial outreach at Humber college was more focused on student population. But at Albion mall, a mix community of different ages, genders, cultures, backgrounds and designations were to be targeted. We all, as a group, discussed about different activities that could be done to make the final outreach more effective and attractive. We decided to do trivia game, coloring activity, face painting, blood pressure tables and also thought of giving prizes during the final outreach. After finishing our trial outreach, I felt that it is of immense importance to meet as a group and discuss about the trial outreach as this gives us an opportunity to resolve certain issues that arose to make the final outreach at Albion more effective. I think that this definitely gave us good results, as everybody was putting their effort to make the outreach better. Good: It was a good experience at outreach in Humber that helped us in knowing the performance and problems of the previous plan. We also identified what people want and need to know, especially about the misconceptions that Rexdale women centre is not only for women, but for women and families. It was good that our entire group brainstormed about different activities that could be helpful for our final outreach. Bad: I felt bad for the fact that majority of the students do not know about Rexdale women centre. It was very effective when we all, as group, applied the theoretical and sound problem solving skills that could be effective for our next outreach at Albion in achieving community outcomes. This plan carries importance as it will definitely increase awareness among the people, that they have some services in their area that can help them in their needs. I think adding the kids activities will help the parents to concentrate about the various services while kids can do the activities. Blood pressure table will help to attract the seniors as seniors like to have their blood pressure done. So while taking blood pressure, we could interact with them about the services of the Rexdale women centre. Using a big poster about saying” NEW TO CANADA”. These ideas were of great help to attract the people who are new to Canada and might be looking for such services. Pamphlets, notices at public places, newspaper advertisements and coordination with other groups working in the same field could have helped a lot. Moreover, questionnaires and surveys could have been a better option to measure the success of our struggle. S:To learn to know about the different community centers and how the individuals could be attracted towards the camp. M:It is easy to attract and learn things from the outreach and we completed this task by doing the outreach at Rexdale women. A:The target of learning and attracting individuals was achievable. R: The target was also realistic as we had all the relevant resources to achieve the tasks.
