Professional Identity and Stewardship - Part II: Leadership Interview of affiliation Introduction The discussion in this paper is a summary of an interview conducted with a nurse manager for a healthcare institution. The manager is a lady and the summary focuses on her role as a health care team member, her perception of professionalism, and her perception of stewardship. Additionally, the paper discusses the nurse’s perception on whether or not one should engage in advocacy and authenticity as well as engage in power and influence when working with fellow colleagues. .Role as a healthcare team member As a manager within nursing, the nurse understands the ever evolving nature of the nursing profession and the fact that nursing calls for new models of care delivery to effectively manage any evolutions.

In this regard, the nurse manager plans on collaborations amongst team members and enhances collaboration between her and the others. Collaboration encourages teamwork. As a team, it is possible and faster to come up with mechanisms to evaluate and asses the necessary and outstanding contributions of each nurse on the basis of their outcomes of prevention and care. From the best evaluation mechanism, the nurse manager embarks on designing new financial models for the sake of building the business face of nursing.

Other areas emphasized on to improve the nursing environment include promoting an environment that is patient-centered; that guarantees safety for both health professionals and the patients; and that guarantees consistent respect for the contributions by others towards nursing (Huston, 2012). Definition of professionalism and influence of professionalism on work From the nurse manager, professionalism in nursing is the tool by which a nurses personal behaviors and the presentation to those around him or her are judged.

Basically, professionalism in nursing extends beyond elements of personal appearance, to include attitude, effective communication skills, and willingness to assist others. The right attitude is only cultivated when one manages to balance work and life such that no personal issues influence work and vice versa (Huston, 2012). Additionally, professionalism through the right attitude and appearance results to meaningful relations, and guarantees the nurse’s capacity to care for others.Stewardship The nurse manager considers self as steward since she ensures that each staff has their roles and responsibilities well understood and well implemented to promote high quality healthcare.

When called upon, she offers mentorship to younger nurses and assists them to refine their skills. The nurse also encourages others in the team to pursue competencies improvement to remain up to date with relevant nursing competency requirements.Leaders and professional advocacy and power and influence As a manager, the nurse supports for professional advocacy especially in sharing with nurses in her team the practices that work and those that do not, and in what situations each will be applied during practice (Huston, 2012).

Amongst the nurses, there is a mix of different strengths which when tapped can result to a multidisciplinary collaborative practices. The result is impressive knowledge and competent management of health problems coupled with positive patient responses. Through the use of one’s power and influence, nurse leaders can advocate for safe and healthy work environment. Further, nurse leaders should engage others and listen to their opinion regarding the issue and then decide which is the best and desired changes to meet the patient’s and nurse’s needs today and in the future (Huston, 2012).
