Profile of a Health Care Manager al Affiliation Profile of a Health Care Manager What makes a good health care manager? One is convinced that a good health care manager should possess the essential theoretical framework on health issues as well as competencies in the functions required of a manager; this means knowledge in planning, organizing, directing and controlling various facets of the work setting being governed. The key element that makes a health care manager good is the possession of knowledge and skills required of the role and responsibilities that need to be undertaken within the health care environment.

This includes ability to apply leadership styles that matches the personalities of subordinates, as well as that which is required of the situation. Likewise, a good health manager assumes a proactive stance in addressing the needs of stakeholders under his or her jurisdiction.Why do professionals choose either of these paths? Professionals choose to work in settings that provide either direct or nondirect service, depending on their knowledge, skills set, and experience. Some health care managers are called to directly serve the needs of a specific profile of clientele.

Others serve in non-direct settings, such as “consulting firms, pharmaceutical companies, associations, and medical equipment companies” (Thompson, Buchbinder, & Shanks, n.d., p. 2). Thus, depending also on the delegated responsibilities, these managers abide by the need to serve various stakeholders; either in direct or nondirect service capacities.Identify and compare the characteristics common in those health care managers who work in either direct or nondirect care settings. Health care managers who work on direct care settings possess characteristics and traits that would ensure competencies in health care; specifically the following key competencies associated with an effective manager: “conceptual, technical, and interpersonal skills” (Thompson, Buchbinder, & Shanks, n.d., p. 5). Health care managers who work in nondirect care settings should have the overview and background required from these nondirect services, as well as the expected responsibilities required from them.
