All identified effects of the exercise were positive induced emotional and physical status as well as the children’s self-worth. The children’s willingness to engage in the practice was however low and parents’ support for the exercise program was poor. While outpatient exercise offers a solution to cystic fibrosis among children, its implementation has not been embraced and this could account for the persistent incidence rates. Validity and reliability of the study, based on the empirical approach over a long period, means that exercise is effective for managing cystic fibrosis, and should therefore be prescribed to the patients (Gulmans, De Meer, Brackel, Faber, Berger and Helders 1999, p. 39-45).

Another study on the effects of physical exercise on cystic fibrosis conditions supports the significance of exercise as a management strategy. The study by Zach, Oberwaldener and Hausler that exposed cystic fibrosis victims to physical exercise, without any alternative management strategy, identifies both short term and long term effectiveness of physical exercise. Improvement in forced expiration, as the results showed, supports the effectiveness of the exercise in resolving the respiratory inefficiency among cystic fibrosis patients. The study’s results identify the effectiveness of exercise as a management strategy because of improved airflow and muscle functionality.

Even though the patients did not report improvements in their lung capacities, the positive changes that the treatment-induced mean that exercise is an effective strategy. Exercise is further a natural approach and therefore offers better safety, because of freedom from the potential adverse effects of chemicals in industrial medications that have been used to manage cystic fibrosis. The empirical results can therefore be used to support the application of exercise as a safe and effective alternative to the management of cystic fibrosis (Zach, Oberwaldener and Hausler 1982, p. 587- 589).

Motivational interviewing is a facilitator approach to change and plays a significant role in influencing behaviour towards desired objectives. Research by Hettema, Steele, and Miller shows the effectiveness of motivational interviewing across population segments. The significance of the effectiveness of the interviewing differs across populations but it converges with time, an indicator that people respond differently to motivational interviewing but the gap reduces with more intervention measures. Differences in effectiveness also depend on such factors as a service provider, the client’s orientation, and the environment.

Identified effectiveness, by the researchers, of motivational interviewing as a secondary measure to treatments identifies it as a mediator to the effectiveness of intervention measures. The difference in the effectiveness of motivational interviewing also means that varying efforts by clients and service provides may be necessary for ensuring desired results in treatment measures. Implementing motivational interviewing can therefore play an effective role in influencing parents’ attitude towards treatment strategies for cystic fibrosis (Hettema, Steele and Miller 2005, 95- 109).

Cystic fibrosis is a chronic condition that affects the breathing system and the digestive system. Management measures however exist for its symptoms and empirical studies support the effectiveness of non-medical alternatives. Physical exercise is one of the alternatives that are effective in improving patients’ conditions but children and their parents have been reluctant to implement the treatment. Motivational interviewing, applied with a focus on diversity needs, is, however, a solution to the barrier use of exercise for managing cystic fibrosis.
