What is expected from a and a professional in terms of characteristics and behaviors? are expected to be punctual, hard working, regular, dedicated, and disciplined. Professionals are also expected to display the same characteristics and behaviors, but with the added expectation of informed decision making. Students, particularly children are guided in their works by the teachers because they are not mature enough to decide for themselves whereas professionals are expected to handle complex tasks requiring multifarious skills singlehandedly and with perfection.

How is professionalism judged? Professionalism of an individual is judged by the level to which he/she follows the rules and work principles established in a particular work setting. Professionalism requires informed decision making. The individual needs to take responsibility for his/her actions and do his/her best to ensure optimal output remaining within the laws and regulations imposed by the state and the organization. Moreover, professionalism of an individual is also judged by his/her productivity, compliance with the deadlines, and the quality of work.

Are there certain “unwritten rules” (e.g., no gossiping, addressing others respectfully in emails) that one should follow? Although most organizations in the contemporary age have a defined set of ethical and work-related rules, yet certain rules are expected to be understood by the employees without indication because they are the requirements of professionalism, and may not thus be necessarily included in the ethical codes. Such rules include but are not limited to no gossiping, dealing others with respect, dressing decently, and greeting the coworkers.

One must follow these rules because they depict one’s behavior as well as one’s impression on others. In addition to that, following these rules is necessary in order to have a professional attitude and excel in the professional life.
