Geographic areas such as counties, cities are separate jurisdictions in that they have powers that are independent of the federal and state governments. Legal jurisdiction in medical law is concerned with how the courts have the power to pronounce controversial issues coming from the realm of medical practice. The purpose is to influence the nature of medical law in practice. The patients’ have the right to good health care and medical treatment (Veitch, 2007).

In law, standing refers to the capacity of a party to show to the court enough connection to and harm from the law. Before a person can bring a lawsuit before a court, he must have the standing to sue or possess a sufficient stake in the issue to justify seeking relief through the court system. The party filing the lawsuit is required to have suffered or be threatened by harm. Non-technical aspects to the decisions that medical practitioners make arise questions of morality, philosophy and politics. The relatives of the patient cannot sue a doctor for committing an abortion on a pregnant mother whose life is in danger.
