Speech-language pathologists are also recognized as speech therapists and they are responsible for diagnosing and treating communication, vocal, and language disorders. These therapists require various skills including interpersonal, problem solving, and openness to experience skills.

A therapist requires good interpersonal skills because the entire therapy sessions conducted by these therapists involve communication and understanding the issues faced by the patient and his or her family (Vinson 27).  The therapist should have high emotional intelligence, this means that he should be able to understand the emotional problems faced by the patient and should provide help accordingly. The therapist has to communicate with the patient and ask them various questions, the therapist should have the tolerance to listen to what patients have to say and respect their views.

Speech-language therapy can be provided in various ways, there are different ways for solving different speech problems. The therapist who works with a team should take others’ views about the problem and possible solutions for the problem. This will help the therapist look at different problems from different perspectives.

The standards of problem-solving skills of a speech therapist should be very high. He should have the ability to first diagnose the problem faced by the patient and identify the main reason for that problem.
