The Intent for Speech-Language Pathology - Essay Example

My parents were very upset but they did not just sit back and watch me suffer; instead, they took me to a doctor who recommended speech therapy. The speech therapy sessions were pretty intense for me at first because I was still a child and felt pressurized by the idea of not being able to talk properly. However, my speech therapist was an expert and the way he brought me back to normalcy was outstanding. Those were the moments when I felt emotionally attached to making a difference in someone’s life.

As I grew up these feelings grew stronger and I felt a passion for doing good for those who were going through the same situation as mine. Speech therapy was a recollection that I always treasured as it made it possible for me to communicate with others and this is exactly what I want to do for others.Becoming a speech-language pathologist is one of the most rewarding careers one can opt for. To top off my interest in the field I was always very apt in sciences in high school. Therefore the major that I chose in grad school was Life Sciences.

I have also completed my Honors Program in Psychology and Integrated Biology which I feel will really help me advance in this career. Speech-language pathology is the perfect career option for me because it will fulfill my dream of helping people and along with that shape my innate love for science. Although I was suggested other options such as Respiratory Therapy, Audiology and physiotherapy, I could not picture myself doing any of these. Essentially because of my connection with Speech-language pathology, I am certain that I will excel in this field.

The overall procedure fascinates me and drives me to provide the chance of better communication to others. I feel an inner satisfaction by doing so and I really wish that I can get the opportunity to follow this career. To further assist me with this subject I have also studied Linguistics and Phonetics. I was very good at both of them and I am sure these courses will help me get a better understanding of speech-language pathology. While I was doing these short courses I also worked as an intern with a private speech therapy clinic during which I became increasingly acquainted with the daily activities and requirements of this program.

As I observed during sessions, each patient presented a different challenge and each one had a different area of speech that needed to be worked upon. I not only saw how adults are treated, but I was also fortunate enough to experience an entire therapy cycle of a little boy which spanned over 5 weeks. When he had first visited he could barely communicate but by the end of the 5 weeks there as a remarkable improvement in his language. I learned a lot from this whole experience of working with a speech pathologist because I got the chance to observe very closely how it is to work at this job.

I have taken part in many extra circular activities and was also the president of the drama and theatrics club at school. Thus I know that I am very good at dealing with people. I am definitely a team player. I work hard; learn quickly and dedication to my work is one of my strongest attributes. Even at grad school, I was involved in many events; I had the honor to be part of the organizational team of many workshops, fundraisers and campaigns.
