Pamela Meyer: How to Spot a Liar Pamela Mayer in her speech identify different concept of communication through which one can identify a liar. The speaker attributes speech, body language, confidences and other distinctive features that are used to identify a liar. She attributes day-to-day activities as the environments at which liars may exist. The speaker’s ideas are based on assumptions and personal components. The ideas highlighted by the speaker could be applicable to some instances but may fail to reflect the truth of the matter. There is need to analyze this concept with respect to various concepts. The speaker effectively proofs her point but fails to acknowledge exceptions within her speech. The essay will focus on the main points highlighted by the author and use them identify the authenticity of the speech. Perceptions and personal opinions could differ from the reality. The manner in which a person presents his or her points could be either persuasive or misleading. In Mayer’s speech, she emphasizes on verbal language. As a means of identifying when one is lying, the speaker acknowledges the difference displayed in speech. However, this may change depending on the nature of a person. In this case, inconsistency in speech may be used to identify whether a person is lying. At this point, the speaker fails in her attempt to justify her statement. In evaluation the factual component of the statement, it is evident that a person may present some elements of inconsistency of speech. This may be attributed to shyness or tension caused by the environment. At this point, a person may be limited at environmental factors and due to the uncomfortable circumstances, alter words that according to Mayer could be termed as a liar. The person in question may have limited control of the external factors and thus create a tense atmosphere. The effect could be present in the body language (Meyer, 2011). According the speaker body language could tell is one is liar. Mayer identifies staring into ones eye as a reason to assume some one is lying. Eye constant in most cases implies personal confidence. The assumption that directs eye constant relates to a liar is misleading. A person may maintain eye contact as a means of either seeking attention or emphasizing on a certain situation. The speaker may maintain eye constant to ensure a certain concept is altered and reaches the intended audience. The manner in which a person controls his or her eyes does not tell if they are lying. In most cases confidentiality and the subject being communicated will determine whether a person maintain eye contact. Eye contact is an element used to identify good public speakers, a public speaker should be able to communicate and keep in touch with the audience. The most common element used is the body language. The other element of body language involves hand movements and posters. According to the speaker, instability in both the hand movements and body postures could tell if one is a liar (Meyer, 2011). Using her assumptions a person may be perceived to be a liar by the manner in which he moves his or her hands. At this point, the component may apply partially but could be deceptive if one is communicating using gestures. At this point, it is difficult to tell if one is telling the truth (Lloyd-Hudges, 29). It is evident that the speaker limits her evident and fails to acknowledge that different people communicate differently. Some may chose to use hand movements to emphasize on a specific element. Emphasis at this point could be mistaken for lies if one uses Mayer’s school of thoughts. The eyes may be deceiving in that a person communicating may be deemed to be lying while in real sense utilizing speech and gestures to emphasize his actions or concepts. Hotspots are other elements presented by the speaker as tools to identify if a person is lying. Under this assumption, a particular pattern between actions and words will tell if a person is a liar (Meyer, 2011). The insistency between the two will tell if a person is being truthful. This concept could factual given the fact that actions and word are essential in emphasizing a certain point. The failure by a given speaker to find a balance between the two would attribute to failures and elements of lies. A lair could be confident on the outside but his or her inner conscience could be guilty thus create inconsistency between actions and words. The lack of balance could be attributed to lack of confidence or anxieties. These two factors could be attributed to the fact that a person is lying (Hartley 101). The author at this point is portraying some element of truth in her argument. The concept could be applied in different environments in that a person may alter his action in an attempt to deceive the audience on possibilities of lies in either their speech or action. The speaker in her assumptions about liars she highlights that a person may identify a lair by interacting with one. The nature in which a person cooperates or relates will tell if they are a liar (Meyer, 2011). In this case, a lair may fail to cooperate in an effect to divert attention or create a sense of unease to the second party. A person telling the truth will cooperate no matter what the situation may seem. In this instance, the speaker provides elements of truth. A person interacting with other parties in this case would identify the truth. That nature of cooperation is applicable to various environments. In most cases, suspects may tend to apply the technique to avoid convictions. Convictions in this case would be the consequences of lies. Those who perfect the act of lying may be an exception using this criterion (Lloyd-Hudges 205-15). Scientific components could also be used to identify a liar according to the speaker. Mayer relates her philosophies and assumptions to those proven by scientist (Meyer, 2011). The speaker uses diversity to put across her points. The model is effective in that the speaker is able to proof using scientific methods that a liar is visible through his actions or words. When providing proof of a certain argument one need to use diversity in drawing the line between the truth and lies. The speaker does well to include the scientific element to substantiate her argument. Using this approach one may be persuaded that person’s actions are visible through his actions or words. The speaker introductions are evident that the audience would wish to listen more to her presentation but would expect substantiation to believe in her assumptions. The scientific elements provided the weight needed to ascertain whether a person’s, activities or speech are truthful or are lies. In conclusion, it is evident that Mayer’s speech provides some elements of authenticity and some misleading concept. The speech presents nonfactual elements while trying to create a balance between scientific evidence and personal assumptions. The truth remains that a liar may be identified by the manner in which he or she interacts with the environment. The speech or actions by the person may determine whether one is a lair or is displaying elements of truth. The speaker’s choice of diversity while presenting his speech is essential in proving her arguments. Some elements presented by the author are not applicable in specific scenarios hence begs the questions on whether the speaker is being truthful. Some facts are presented in more comprehensive manner in those displaying elements of truth. The link between facts and fictions are present in the presentation.
