Medical Emergency Doctor Profession - Case Study Example

Introduction An emergency room doctor in medical professional is a medical doctor who is specifically deals with emergency cases in the hospital. He is normally called in any time to take care of patients who needs immediate treatment. All fields medical requires an emergence room doctor; he can be a physician, a surgeon or even gynecologist. Mr. Benson white sat at his chair in the doctor's room and looked at the old man in his late sixties with comprehensive look as the old man explained his problem. The old man by the name Mr. Allan Hughes was accompanied by his wife who sat at the side of Mr. Allan silently. After Mr. Allan had explained his situation, the wife Zara asked "doctor can he live" Dr. Benson replied "we shall do all that is possible to ensure that he lives" "please do" Zara added. Mr. White was a man in his mid thirties and looked fine in his white court. He was a surgeon who specialized in heart complication diseases, and he had great compassion in his work. His research works in heart diseases was being acclaimed in the whole country. As a child Mr. White had never thought he will be a doctor, his father was a teacher and always wanted his son to also be a teacher. The little white thus dreamed of being a teacher. But things never went as planned. One day when white was in high school his father who had been promoted to school inspector had to attend a seminar in New York. The familiar left for the airport and white bade his father a goodbye. On his way back the airplane the way traveling in Developed a mechanical problem and had to make an emergency landing. By the grace of god the airplane did not explode and many of the passengers were saved. Benson's father was among them. Unfortunately, he developed a medical problem as his cardiovascular veins suffered multiple injuries. This lead to massive heart failure and his father had to be supported with machines to enable him to survive. The doctors treating him tried to revive his system but they seemed to failure. Benson was very devastated as he watched his father succumb to heart failure and he passed away. Benson promised that he will never allow another person to suffer like that. From then he did every think to be a doctor particularly a surgeon. So, at the age of twenty five, Benson graduated from the famous Chicago school of medicine and took a job with Pine view hospital which had a very well equipped laboratory and a theatre with the latest medical apparatus for surgery. He has operating on many heart problems and his success rate was 90%. He was always in hospital theatre from eight in the morning and stayed late even up to ten in the night. His daily duties included examining the patients with heart problems. Doing check ups and performing surgery. His first case was of a child who had developed a tumor in his heart the tumor extended so much and the boy required an emergency operation to correct the situation. The boy's parent came with the boy after x-ray revealed that the tumor was almost blocking the whole of his pulmonary artery thus blocking the pathway for blood which will have lead death. After examining the x-ray Benson ordered the boy to be taken to the theater and asked the parents to the inner room. After getting the medical history from the parents, who said that the boy was just normal until three days ago, when he became dull and at times dizzy. On taking the boy to the local clinic the physician there had recommended that the boy should go through a proper medical examination. This had revealed that the boy had a tumor. Benson asked the parents to sign the consent forms to allow him to operate since the child was a minor. The operation was going to be a major one and it was scheduled to start in the next four hours. Before that the boy had to be put on monitors to be viewed and the exact extend of the tumor to be also determined. As Doctor Benson studied the images on the screen, he realized how delicate the operation was doing to be. In the next four hours everything had been arranged and the boy Mike lay on the operating table, he was quickly given an anesthesia. The operating team which consisted of two nurses, two assistant and the head doctor, Benson quickly put on the masks and gloves and went into action. As the lights started to dim for mike the doctor expertly, drew a line on mike's chest and brought the shrapnel in to use. He slowly but keenly started opening the inner part of the chest and worked to the heart. With keen eyes and expect hands and watching the images on the screen Dr. Benson was able to carry out the operation in the four eyes. The tumor which had developed on the pulmonary was removed and the boy left to recover. It was estimated that it will take six months before mike become normally again. Dr. Benson was awakened at three in the night "doctor, doctor we have an emergency please come quickly" sister Anne had called. Dr. Benson quickly picked his jacket and rushed to the hospital. On reaching in the emergency room the doctor found a man in the operating room lying on the bed and in great pain. "What is the problem here" the doctor. had asked. Gun shot, he was answered. Apparently the man was a victim of car jacking and the thugs had shot him. The bullet had entered the heart and the patient was in dire need of operation to remove the bullet in order to save his life. Dr Benson then got in motion ordering his staff to get to work. The patient was quickly given anesthesia and the doctor started operating. He managed to remove the bullet but it had serious damaged the aorta. So there was supposed to be another operation to be followed to repair the aorta by getting some implant. After the second operation which was more delicate the patient was allowed to leave the intensive unit and move to the private section. So as Dr. Benson listened to this old man he knew that there was another challenge to be faced. The old man explained that for the last four month he had developed problems in the respiratory system. He could not breathe well and he seemed to gulp for air all the time. He had visited some private hospital which had referred him here. On reading his medical card the doctor found out that the old man had a condition known as cardiovascular arthritis which means that his heart has a hole in the left section and it was the one causing all this trouble. The problem was that the patient was old and the doctors doubted if he can with stand the operation. According to the patients doctor who had diagnosed the condition the operation was to take eight hours and it was demanding on the part of the old man has they thought he may suffer from heart failure if subjected to such long hours. Dr Benson studied the medical papers of the old man who had been treated by Dr. Stephen one of Saint Luke hospital the old man had earlier gone to. He rang Dr. Stephen who gave him additional information on what he has been trying to do. Dr. Stephen confirmed that he had used chemotherapy but the response from the old man was poor. After the consultation Dr. Benson took the old man to the examination room here checked the pressure of the old man who was called Allan Verk and he knew that this was going to depend on the will of the old man. The options were also not good as not operating meant that the old man had at most two months to hold on before he died. Dr Benson asked the old man if felt fine and the man replied he felt okay. Dr Benson advised Mr. Allan to go back and come after two weeks, in which time he was supposed to eat well and relax to gain stability for the operation. In mean time he was also asked to report to the hospital at least twice in those two weeks. After the two weeks Mr. Allan Together with his wife came to see Dr. Benson who was waiting for them. The doctor put him through some tests and admitted him in the hospital awaiting the technical operation that had to be performed to save his life, his wife was to stay to take care of him and give him encouragement. The operation was to take place in two day and the old man had to be monitored and nursed for the operation. On the day of operation the doctor went through the medical charts and did his final check up on Mr. Allan. He was s satisfied that the operation will be successful. Mr. Allan was dressed up and wheeled to the operating room. His wife said a silent prey and ones more begged the doctor to all his best. The doctor put on the heart scanner had he was going to use to perform this complicated surgery. The aide prepared everything and work commenced. After six hours the doctor emerged from the operating room, Zara was waiting in the waiting room anxiously, "how is he" she asked "fine" the doctor replied. Zara sighed and thanked god. Dr. Benson left satisfied to see that his patient survived the operation and thanked god that another person has been spared an earlier death. Conclusion In life it is good to be able to assist the les fortunate if we have a chance and means to assist, it counts a lot and makes a lot of difference to a lot of people. As professional, it is always better to specialize in our fields and try to reach the highest level. As it can be seen medical profession is a field that calls for a lot of personal sacrifice, to be able to rescue life. Also as a doctor you must be prepared to take risks when a patient is in a critical condition it can save life.
