This entails the procedure and the importance of the research to the children and future generations. They should also be informed that the children participation should be voluntary, and nobody should uncouth them for refusal to participate. This allows parents to decide on their willingness to take part. To maintain the voluntary aspect, the participants should be allowed to withdraw their consent in participating in the research (Spriggs, 2010). The participants should be informed of their invitation to participate in research, research purpose, benefits and potential risks of the research.
The participants should be assured that the consent will be applicable through out the research, and the highest degree of privacy will be maintained on the participant’s information. After laying down the avenues for the consent and the participants are in agreement with them, all the parties signed an agreement form that outlines the mode of engagement and the underlying principles (Sin, 2005). Expected questions 1. What is the purpose of the research? 2. What are the risk and potential benefits both to the participants and general population that arises from the research 3.
Am I free to withdraw my child’s participation in the research? 4. . 10. Should I stop the use of current drug for my child? 11. What is the relationship between the test drug and the current drugs my child is using? Information to be shared First and foremost, it is worth noting that there is a significant difference between children and guinea pigs. Children, just like their grown up counterparts are subject to curiosity and anxiety. The call for anxiety in children increases especially, when they perceive themselves as different from their peers.
As such, a child suffering from late stage leukemia is sensitive to events occurring around him/her (Sanchez, 2012). The child is already accustomed to the medical procedure that shave sustained him in the past. For the medical research proposed in this study to be effected, the child deserves explanation as to what the procedure is; the aim and of course, the medical implication. It would be wild to assume that the patient being a child will take the change in treatment kindly even where no explanation is offered.
It is necessary that the researcher with the help of the child’s parents shares as much information with the child as possible. This will safeguard the child’s psychological strength. Should the study involve children? A study of this nature should not involve children at all. The placebo in this case is bound to greatly increase the progression of leukemia since it is already at its late stage. Children suffering from leukemia pose quite a challenge in their diagnosis. In a majority of cases, chemotherapy is often not an option as is the case in adults.
This way, reversing the effects of a failed study would be life threatening to the child. In addition, the use of a placebo for the controlled study is quite
