Community interventions include programs such as reducing the number of smokers in the community. Intervention processes include community mobilization through channels such as public education and mass media campaigns (Edberg 93-94). Interventions in the community target individuals or a group that is at risk. The changes may be great but affect a small subset of the community that is often at risk as compared to that affected by community intervention. Intervention in the community program may include those of people with HIV. The programs involve processes such as the development of role models and the distribution of role model stories (Edberg 95-95).
Sustainability refers to connecting the program with the community so that the community is able to run the program even after the external funding is finished. This could be by enabling them to link with other sources of funding or by increasing the capacity of the community to carry on the program (Edberg 99).
