Key Links between the Environment and Behavior in Terms of the Problems of Obesity - Book Report/Review Example

The availability of various food types in the market via increased advertising by the food industry affects the behavior of people where they buy more often thus increasing their chance of being overweight. In addition, lack of an environment with exercise options leads to behavior where people do not do physical activities and on the contrary do other activities that promote obesity (Edberg, 2007). Moreover, the physical layout of the environment affects certain behaviors as walking that otherwise qualifies as physical exercise thus hindering obesity. At the same time, an environment that promotes extensive marketing of unhealthy food products leads to overeating of such foods and hence obesity.
Would it be fair to say that obesity is a problem resulting just from individual choice in terms of behavior?
Ideally, it would not be fair to say that obesity is a problem resulting just from individual choice in terms of behavior. This is generally because there are other external factors that promote obesity such as the environment. Such factors do not rely on individual choice in terms of behavior. Nevertheless, individual choice in behavior is the most dominant cause of obesity in modern society (Edberg, 2007).
Where would you focus your efforts to address behaviors related to obesity? Youth violence? HIV/AIDS?
In addressing behaviors related to obesity, I would focus on youth violence. This is because violence is in itself a behavior that is rampant among the youth and hence the connection with obesity. Additionally, factors like family interactions, the community, and the environment affect youth’s behavior that influences obesity just as it influences youth violence.
Conclusively, I understand that there are links between the environment and behavior in relation to obesity.
