This is due to the high radio frequencies that cell phones and their base stations emit (Health Evidence Network 4). Cell phones and mobile network base stations produce radio frequencies of between 100 MHz and 60 GHz that have significant changes on the brain, carcinogenic processes, cardiovascular system and longevity. Research by the Health Evidence Network found that the radiation from cell phones and their base stations increased body temperature to the areas exposed to the radiation by up to 2 degrees Celsius (Health Evidence Network 7).

This is in accordance to the endocrine, cardiovascular and immune systems, which is possible owing to the ability of electromagnetic radiation to break chemical molecular bonds. However, the microwaves from cell phones and their base stations do no not have enough energy to break the bonds thus there is minimal likelihood for it to alter DNA. In this light, it means that most of the misconceptions associated with cell phones and their base stations are widely false. This is because, Health Evidence Network reports “radiation from mobile phones and signal stations does not have enough energy to break chemical or molecular bonds directly” (Health Evidence Network 7). . ause for rodents, the entire brain is exposed to radiation to their small size, while, in humans, only the part closest to the cell phone remains exposed to radiation.

In turn, this makes it difficult for even the earlier mentioned thermal effects of radiation to be detected, take place in humans. Therefore, the basis of cerebral impairment due to temperature rise is unfounded. In addition, experiments do not necessarily weed out all possible effects of radiation; thus, only minimum damage can be inflicted. This is due to the human immune and endocrine systems that can “effectively resist some external pressures, adapt to them and maintain stability” (Health Evidence Network 7).

In spite of all these findings, health regulatory authorities, such as the food and drug administration require “cell phones should expose people to the least radio frequencies possible” (FDA Office of Women’s Health 1). This shows that there are concerns despite the lack of scientific backing of the harmful effects of cell phones and the radiation produced by their signal stations. In addition, other environmental authorities are coming up with guidelines to direct how cell phones are used or marketed.

This is concerning children whose bodies are not fully developed, and especially the skull to protect the brain from harmful electromagnetic radiation. As a result, since children “will be using mobile phones for longer, and the effects will not be known for time to come” (Maisch 4). This shows the level of caution associated with cell phone use and harmful consequences because of the unknown or unverified effects of electromagnetic radiation. Concerning cancer, brain tumours in this case, studies have found negative results on the effect of radiation emanating from cell phones in
