Thus, I achieved my Bachelor’s Degree in Health Information Administration. As a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) and currently a professor teaching in the School of Health Sciences, I came to know more about the role of a physician assistant (PA) in the society. So many years of work in the same field made me realize the fact that in order to serve the society well, I need to get better knowledge and skills. My credentials in the healthcare arena will prove that I possess the necessary skills, attitude and knowledge to join the prestigious PA program.

First of all, I have worked as Manager in a healthcare setting with nearly 225 physicians and allied health professionals. Secondly, I am well familiar with the medical field as I teach courses like Human Diseases and Introduction to the Medical Record. Moreover, I remain in constant communication with various hospitals as a part of my job. At this juncture, it seems very necessary to point out the efforts I have already made in this direction. I completed courses like pharmacology, medical terminology, quantitative methods & research, healthcare quality improvement, and CPHQ training; and the sole purpose of all these efforts was to get admission into a PA program.

In addition to all these, since March 2011, I have shadowed a PA every week and this has bolstered my desire to join the physician assistant program and ultimately become a PA. As a shadow I got the chance to interact and engage with PAs and physicians while performing their professional duties. During the process, I had the privilege of learning what it takes to become a PA by observing and asking various treatment and evaluation questions after each session. The insight I gained from this experience provides me with the motivation to pursue the physician assistant degree program.

Without a doubt, I understand what the job of a PA entails and I am ready to acquire more skills and knowledge required in order to become a physician assistant. Along with this innate affinity towards the profession, there are other factors that encouraged me to be a PA. One of them is my experience with my sick father. As I cared for my disabled father, I got another reason to appreciate the work of a PA and the motivation to help future patients like my father. Having a disabled parent, I have spent a lot of hours taking care of him while out of work.

Though many hours of academic work were lost causing a slight dip in my grades, I am contented that I learned something from this experience. During these times, I took a keen interest in checking my father’s medication as well as liaising with his doctors to inform them of my father’s progress. As a result of these interactions, I realized that working as a physician assistant could enable me to deliver better healthcare services to future patients in need of medical attention. These interactions have, therefore, shaped my desire to enroll into the PA program where I can learn how to carry out evaluations and therapeutic procedures, along with counseling services to future patients.

With my admission into the PA program and my father’s situation now rectified, I am very comfortable that I will be able to grasp all medical concepts and skills to become the best PA possible. My non-traditional viewpoint of being a manager of health information and medical staff is another reason that
