10 August Ripley Syndrome In our environment, it’s not all we see, that is actually what is there. Appearances are often deceptive. People appearing to live a small kind of life are sometimes great individual. The way people are dressed up might not actually depict the kind of person they are and personality is often faked. All these highlight towards an expression of different idea or personality from what people see us to be. The issue surrounding the Ripley syndrome is that of different personality from what a person should portray. Ripley syndrome is considered to be one of the several pervasive developmental disorders which remain unclear, controversial and not fully understood pervasive disorder. The concept of Ripley syndrome is also used to qualify some individual that lived their lives in a confusing or in a spontaneous mode which is not predictable. The effect of the syndrome on the affected individual is the continuous search for identity which could result in a form of emotional trauma to the affected individual or impair the relationship with others. The concept of deception in psychology simply represents the emotion of deceit or the ways of deceiving or living a life of deceit (Goldie, 33). This concept could be viewed in different perspective depending on the context. In some ways, it represents a false situation or context, while in another could also represent failing to fulfil what is required. The concept of deception could also be explained in different context i.e. in social deception or self deception. Each has different meaning because of how they are being controlled. Deception in social environment is different from self deception in terms of developments which are usually intentional and carefully planned before its being executed while self deception might be a result of long term attitudinal changes that tend to results as a response to emotional experiences and psychological changes in the reasoning of the individual (Banhsen, 1-33). Sometimes, ego and motives in communication between two sides influences initiation of an act of deception because it might tend to play a strategic role in the result being received at the end of the communication (Goldie, 34). Humans always want to get the best of their communication with other people hence might be influenced to act in a deceptive manner to achieve their goals. Other major factors that tend to influence the initiation of the concept is because the individual want to save his or her face, need to guide the social interactions or avoid conflicts and maintain interpersonal or emotional relationships with others. Since Ripley Syndrome is believed to be a form of false or controversial way of life, it could be considered to be related in a great way to the concept of deception. This is because of the fact that people suffering from the syndrome deceive others to achieve their goals (Attwood, 117). Although this syndrome still remain unclear as regards to it aetiology or pathology, expression is still related to the fake form of interaction. It can be concluded that Ripley Syndrome depends upon the concept of deception for expression. An opposite view into the manifestation of the syndrome in the affected individual could show that he or she is not actually acting intentionally in such manner. This makes it different from the earlier highlighted relationship between the syndrome and the concept of deception. The major issue with this view is just about the misconception towards the actual personality of the affected individual. The person indicated to have the syndrome might not actually possess it but people misquote the manifestations seen in him or her. Ripley syndrome, when actually considered to affect individual he or she will definitely have an impaired relationship with his or her partner and even other friends or family member. This is because of the false-like kind of relationship that they tend to portray to their partner (Lyon & Fitzgerald, 247). Those partners would definitely find it difficult to cope with them. Ripley syndrome could also be used to describe a situation of expression by an individual in ways in which he or she actually wants to be but unfortunately was not presently and those strange desires remain unchangeable. This syndrome just shows an expression of incompleteness or total dissociation from the world and manifestation of the sense of seeking a true identity (Lyon & Fitzgerald, 247). The summary of this syndrome is just that the affected individual will not act real hence tend to live a doubtful or fake kind of life. This could also be termed a chameleon like personality to all who cares about the person. There are several issues with the interpersonal relationships the person tend to have with others. Apart from the manifestations of the search for the true identity by the affected individual, there will be conflict of interest when relating with other people, or understanding how to actually relate with others without getting lost in taught or action (Lyon & Fitzgerald, 247). These will always lead to communication difficulties in relating with others. For instance there may be some forms of sexual interpretations to what he or she sees around and even on the kind of information provided. We all communicate with one another using our senses to screen what needs to be screened from saying or why the affected individual might not actually see screening certain information from others. Another major challenge with the syndrome is that the individual's ways of life will be different from others i.e. when relating with others he or she might not be able to detect if others is hurt when relating together hence has a major problems in maintaining long lasting interpersonal relationship with their romantic partner. The movie “The Talented Mr. Ripley” is about a young men who uses his weapons of forgery, lying and impersonation in order to survive the tough life of NYC. Ripley murders several people to make sure his game of deception continues and he is not caught. This helps him afford a lucrative life and getting portion of the wealth of his friend whom he murdered sometimes. After that he murders his lover in order to make sure that his secret is not revealed to the police or the detectives who were looking after the suspicious murder of his friend Dickie. Ripley Syndrome is clearly displayed throughout the film with the lead character Matt Damon suffering from it. He murders his best friend and several other people in order make sure that his real personality remains hidden from the world. He go to an extreme and murders his lover. This shows that people suffering from Ripley syndrome can be brutal even to loved ones if they fear that they know too much about them or they can reveal their real hidden personality. (Minghella, 1999) Romantic partners might not be able to cope with such kind of individual with a daisy way of life because trust and care which are some of the major keys to achieving success in romantic relationship will be difficult to maintain for a longer time. Romantic partners will always want to trust their partners but when there are issues with other partner as regards to identification or search for personality there will always be a problem in achieving the relationship goals and then relating together for a longer time.
