The seemingly never-ending beach along the coast of the island is very peaceful in its way. Walking along the beach one can feel the soft sand melting away from under the feet. As the salty air blows against the face, it makes you feel calm and relaxed. Sitting on the beach, one can watch the waves crest and then crash over one another as surfers wearing their bright-colored suits jump into the turquoise water. At a distance, one can see the light-colored sailboats as they move slowly on the waters under the clear blue sky. At times the noise of the seagulls fills the air as they fly around searching for food and snatch a fish from the water once in a while. Although the beach offers a calm and relaxed atmosphere, a more exciting experience awaits as one decides to take a ride on the ferry.
The ride on the ferry is one of Galveston’s most popular attractions. Riders can choose to drive their vehicles aboard the ferry. As the wind blows hard and the sea gets a little rough, the waves crash against the ferry drenching the vehicles and the people that stand on the deck. During the ride, one may even notice the smooth gray hump of dolphins in the waters. As one dolphin slides back under the ocean’s surface, more join them as they play in the surf. However as the ferry nears the shore, the dolphins disappear back into their home in the Gulf. During the ride, one may notice fishermen throwing their nets for a catch. Seeing the fishermen gathering their catch and the seagulls hovering around to grab a bite, one can hardly wait to taste the delicacies of the seafood that the place has to offer.
Shrimp is one of the most popular items served on the island. Driving along the beach one can smell the sweet aroma coming from the numerous seafood joints that dot the coast. While waiting for a platter of shrimp at one of these seafood joints, one cannot help but notice the breathtaking, unparalleled gulf view. As the bearer places the steaming hot shrimp on the table, the aroma of the food makes the stomach growl. The bright golden color of the shrimp makes it look very inviting. Although one needs to have a little patience to slowly remove the shrimp from its shell, the first bite confirms that the wait was well worth it.
As the sun drops below the horizon and the sky turns orange and red, one can sit back and reflect on what a wonderful experience it has been. Memories of the waves on the turquoise waters and playful images of the dolphins leave a lasting impression as these vivid pictures fill the mind. A sumptuous meal of local shrimp adds the finishing touch to the great escape that any vacationer would desire. Considering the relaxed and fun-filled coastal experience where one can sit and relax on a sun-filled beach, watch the playful dolphins while riding a ferry, and enjoy the delicacies of the local seafood that Galveston has to offer, one of the patrons of the island George Smitty suggests that it’s easy to heed locals when they say, “Y’all come back, hear!
