The content of diversity became pronounced with gender as the unifying factor playing little role. In attempts to understand the emergence of leftwing and right women movement in 1920s, study on the cleavages of class, region, ethnicity, and race are critical feature of concern.
The mechanics of women politics after the Nineteenth Amendment resonated on the struggle for franchise. The ideas, which characterized the struggle for political inclusion and change of place of a woman in the society, affected both the activist and women that had refrained from politics. The participation of women in reform movement became a commonplace practice.2 The main characteristic of the post suffrage period is the involvement of women in social reform. Input in women in agitating for social reform accounted for the formation of leftwing and the rightwing women movements.
Notably, women who advocated for equality, social and urban reform were the direct products of the drive for franchise. The politic of social reform divided the views of women among the candidates pushing for social change. Proponents of maternity and infancy protection including opposing of child labor and lynching attracted women votes. Other aspects that characterized the movement for reform included the fight for better schools, equitable job relation, and honest politics.
The emergence of the right wing women political movements is another outcome of the franchise. Critics contend that whereas some women emphasized political equality, a significant minority capitalized on the quest for votes as a chance to galvanize the political power of the white and native-born citizens.3 The right wing feminist movement envisioned political equality between women and men as a feature that was only relevant to the white community.
