Critical Reflection It is irrefutable the advent of technological advancement has not only contributed to the effective treatment of numerous human chronic diseases but also used for cosmetic purposes. The latter besides in the past done on the exposed body parts, the procedure has become a remedy in transforming reproductive organs to assume nice appearance as deemed by the partaker. However, I deem the use of medical knowhowa in reinforcing into humanity what is natural or normal is not good.

This is because similar to technology, aesthetic fantasies or view of things with time is bound to change. This is contrary to human body whose structure alterations come with aging but not using medical procedures to embrace short-lived aesthetic fantasies. For instance, most of these aesthetic fantasies after a certain period are bound to change, hence forcing the partaker to think of doing extra genitalia “facelift(s)” (McPencow & Guess, 2012). This is especially to the young girls who some of them are in their teens and tend to admire what they see in the media (Bloom, 2009).

In his study, Bloom cites the increasing preference of genitalia surgical procedures in the current society is due to the absorption pornography content in the mainstream culture. Hence, prompting women to deem what they see is ideal appearance, which they ought to have in pleasing their male counterparts (Bloom, 2009). I think medical technology mostly pioneered by specialists in this field ought to come up with a definite reference regarding what is normal and abnormal. Since, through this way partakers of genitalia surgery will be in a position to know when a person’s reproductive organs entail rectification but not merely for aesthetic purposes.

This is because most people instead of utilizing medical knowhow for their health benefits they are misusing it. Arguments behind the use of genitalia surgery cite unproven purported benefits, which up to date most of them do not have any medical backing (McPencow & Guess, 2012). Since, many people intending to undergo genitalia surgery cite varied reasons most of them based on physical appearance after having compared themselves with exaggerated media images. Therefore, I feel medical technology despite having varied positive benefit to humanity the current generation is not utilizing it the right way.

This is evident with numerous students barely at their teens currently asking for financial support to undergo “designer vaginas” (Bloom, 2009). Bloom in his study claim some students have even confessed to their mothers that they are in need of undergoing the procedure with the intention of altering their parts to appear like those in the media. In most cases, these young partakers and others who normally prefer the procedure assume the action is similar to that of designer jeans. Hence, misusing medical procedures for personal gratification whereby finally the repercussions may be worse and unbearable for the victim(s) (McPencow & Guess, 2012).

Misuse of this vital procedure is also evident in the way varied regional specialists have branded it with enticing words like “vaginal rejuvenation” and “designer vaginoplasty” (McPencow & Guess, 2012). These are business-oriented terms likening human organs with mere clothes that normally emerge with varying trends only to last for a short period. I deem this proves humanity’s quest to reach a superficial level whose duration is extremely short-lived while perverting the essence of genitalia surgery.

This is because many normal people especially women preferring to have genital alteration do not have valid reason but only have imagination of what they consumed from the idealized pornographic content. Some have gone to the extent of carrying cut out magazine images meant to show surgeons how they want their genital organs to appear after the surgery. I think the norm of dictating how one’s essential body members ought to appear is a serious predicament that has crept into the global society.

This is defying what is essential based on humanity’s health while craving for short-term gratifications whereby finally some cases end up being worse than anticipated. For instance, studies so far contacted cite centers meant for these procedures have increased from the recent past to date. Hence, prompting some gynecologists taking advantage of naive victims to benefit themselves through this emergent lucrative business. Based on the current global statistics, the business within a period of five years has increased by 30% compared to other ventures in the same sector (Renganathan, Cartwright & Cardozo).

This is because of humanity’s misuse of medical knowhow while intending to emulate idealized images not only by women but also among the male gender (McPencow & Guess, 2012). References Bloom, A.
