?Running Head: CRITICAL REFLECTION REPORT ID] [Lecturer] Critical Reflection Report As a paramedic I have understood that life is all about giving and not asking for something in return. It feels good when the society is being looked after and that too well. Being a paramedic, I have comprehended the fact that giving back is a feeling apart. It cannot be analyzed in a better fashion. Then again, people have learned that paramedics are true angels, who save blushes for many around the world, every minute of their existence. What classifies me uniquely is the manner under which I am able to manifest myself in line with the requirements that the people have of me and how I cope with such nuances time and again. I am much interested in knowing what the world thinks about me but one thing that certainly goes down well with the belief is the assumption that they take me in a better and higher stead than a lot of other professions. After all, I am in the care giving workforce – a set of people who provide rescue and relief operations as far as the healthcare regimes are concerned. I will discuss in the following how leadership is documented as far as a paramedic professional is concerned as it will shed light on some of the most significant issues that paramedics have and how they are able to meet expectations time and again. I have analyzed that paramedics are comprised of those individuals who showcase their true intent through hard work and commitment. Research into their work methodologies suggests that they are able to exhibit skills which ordinary human beings would find hard to manifest. This is the reason why they are treated differently and with much significance within any society of the world today. What seems like an interesting proposition lies in the fact that the paramedics are able to turn around things within a matter of few minutes, which suggests much goodness on the part of their abilities and the innate talents that are included within the healthcare field. They are able to make decisions on the go and without much fuss (Meadows, 2011). What seems even more surprising to the normal human being are their increased motivational levels which can only encourage and support others along the way. Factually speaking, and as research would put it, paramedics have been able to turn around major disasters into face saving remedies. I am in awe of my colleagues who have been able to give their best time and again because the collective goodwill of the society is connected with this field. One can be sure that the solid footholds upon which paramedics are based leave nothing more that is required on their part. Some of the key factors related with paramedics include understanding the situation at hand and making decisions that have a huge impact on the patient’s life. They have to be vigilant within their domains to make sure that there are no grey areas within their fore. What is even more pertinent is the fact that they need to be available at any and every location where there is a disaster or rescue operation. They are working alongside the firefighters who are also doing their best to save people and minimize the loss of life and property of all concerned. Even though this seems like an easy thing on paper, the fact of the matter is that this is an arduous task which requires immense understanding of the task at hand and constant scrutiny. Those paramedics who are able to do their best over and over again usually win it for their profession but then again, they do not want this to be a factor that would deserve much praise (Spreeuwenberg, 2001). The key factors will always be deemed as an important yardstick for understanding how things shape up within the realms of the paramedics and the entire healthcare management field as a result. My personal reflection regarding my line of work is that paramedic professionals exhibit leadership through their work manifestations. I have always believed that the paramedic professionals are serving the cause of the society better than a number of other fields. At times, their leadership has been a source of inspiration for people around them and are taken as best case examples all around. This personal reflection has come with my own understanding that I gained over a period of time as well as the readings that I have done regarding paramedics and their activities. I have learned that these individuals will go out of their way to help others and would not think twice before putting their body on the line. Indeed this is a Herculean task that they undertake on a regular basis and for this they deserve all the credit (Mannion, 2006). The role of the society in understanding their leadership role is quintessential because the paramedics must be praised for their activities and undertakings to make them realize that their profession is being hailed on a national level. Also the paramedics’ leadership is being studied by other professions to comprehend what these individuals are doing on a consistent basis to win the favors of all and sundry. It is important to define what leadership for paramedics essentially is and what it takes to be an able and trustworthy leader. The most significant characteristics of a leader require of him to be true to his people. For paramedics, this comes out in an automated fashion. They help others and give them assistance, both in the form of verbal and operational relief. The use of treatments, medication and all other avenues to counter distress within the patients makes them a winner in entirety. Leadership is portrayed when they are able to look after the patients by thinking on their feet and making decisions quickly. Even though this is a difficult job, the paramedics make it possible to be looked upon as leaders within their relevant line of profession (Caple, 1995). They are openly hailed for what they do and are recognized for their respective work ethos. Even though they do not learn how to become leaders, the field of paramedics is such that any individual assumes this role through hard work and conviction. They understand their tasks well and this is the reason why they are able to showcase their mettle in a leading way. Leadership therefore is a central premise of all paramedics and it has been like this for several decades. Paramedics demonstrate leadership through timely actions, performance of work regimes like emergency respiratory procedures, stabilizing neck and head injuries, assessing health situations and administering medications to suggest a few. Even though most of their tasks are pure medical related, they are essentially looking after the people in a verbal manner as well. This happens when they are treating the patients. Their operational duties combine with a soft stance on their part which helps the patients as far as the healing process is related. It allows the things to be put within a proper context and perspective (Chapman, 2009). It also gives the right to learn new things for the paramedics who are always experiencing new individuals and events. They like to document what they learn and share amongst their own selves so that the combined learning goes a long way towards benefiting the field of paramedics. The healthcare regimes therefore get a boost for all the right reasons and this is something that paves the way for growth and development as far as the field of paramedics is concerned. I understand that their work tasks are cut out in such a fashion that their operative measures take up most of their time but then again, the paramedics do an extra effort to reach out to the patients by giving them something more satisfying in the form of consolatory words and gestures. Professionally speaking, paramedics are doing what ordinary mortals are not even thinking about. They are giving in their best time and again. What I feel about this issue is that paramedics are doing some of the most difficult tasks that one can think of. They are putting their lives at risk which is not an easy act on their part. My critical reflection finds out how paramedics are able to turn around things which other people would not even think about or are unable to do within their day to day lives. This is because there is unity of thought and purpose to set things right and that too in a quantifiable manner. One must understand that this is not an easy task and should be achieved in such a manner that there is learning and development for the paramedics at large (Ross, 2012). However, if this does not take place smoothly, then one is bound to ask how paramedics are able to get encouraged when they have no support system within their entireties. The answers seem quite a few but the most significant aspect revolving around such domains is that the paramedics are making an effort to learn, and this remains quite a central figure of their personalities, speaking purely from a professional standpoint. Why leadership remains important for paramedics is because they have to be answerable to the society and give quick response for their actions and undertakings. If they act a silent ear on the issues that plague the people who are undergoing stress and start showing negligence within their tasks and means, this field would suffer as a result. Fortunately so, the same has not happened to this day, which has meant much goodness to have come out for a number of people all around the globe. Since leadership is automated in nature within a paramedic’s professional settings, his insight is based on the belief that if he does well, it will be translated within his life as well. Perhaps this is the reason why many paramedics have started to envision a spiritual life ahead for them as they move along in their work settings. Since they are in the field of care giving, the spiritual settings are only understandable. There are no two opinions why this should not happen (Jolemore, 2008). Then again, it is totally up to the individual under consideration as to how he wants his professional dealings to be carried out and what he expects in return for the same. What I have learned from the field of paramedics is that these individuals are true angels. They are doing work which normal human beings would dare not to get into. A great number of people within the society look up to them for guidance and give them the respect that they deserve. Others look up to their measures for gaining an insight into leadership within professional practice. What remains positively ingrained however is a feeling that the paramedic professionals are doing something worthwhile for the cause of the society and there is absolutely no denying the fact whatsoever. This is the reason why many paramedics are seen as role models for the younger generation and huge corporations and organizations are bringing them to the fore to teach their employees what going out of the way means (Heath, 2009). Excelling within their relevant line of profession has meant that these business enterprises have used them as a source for imparting education as to how ordinary mortals can turn things around, and that too for the better of not only their own selves but the people around them. This is indeed an interesting insight that has come about as the paramedic field has advanced over the years, and the same will continue to be the case in the coming times as well. What others can derive from paramedics and the related field is a sense of empathy and deep understanding based on tolerance, care and assistance for everyone. Empathy is based on the assumption that if these paramedics realize what the patients are going through, they will make the same measures upon others as they would have done for their own selves. Empathy is also manifested by an understanding that human beings need care and attention, and more so when they are involved within a tragic event or happening. The paramedics understand this premise and because of such realms developing around them, give their best through leadership roles and management styles. Even though some people become weak-hearted when they see blood and distress upon the injured human beings, these paramedics are an exception (Fitzgerald, 1998). They make sure that they control their own selves as well as the patients whom they are treating. It is indeed a difficult process that they undertake and all credit must be due upon them because they are carrying out something intrinsically difficult day in and day out. Hence their leadership values and proactive initiatives must be accounted for and acknowledged in an open forum, as and when there is one need to do so. From my own experiences that I have had in paramedics, I can safely say that this field has impacted my life like none other. I have acquired some of the most sought after learning that would not have been possible if I were not a paramedic myself. I have become a leader in my own right and I credit many individuals for this fresh awakening inside my entirety. I have learned to value things around me and the people who live with or interact in one way or the other (Bentley, 2012). I have understood that a smile is the best foot forward and should be given out as regularly as possible. I have also deciphered being a paramedic myself that life is all about giving to the most deserving and those who are undergoing severe trauma and troubles within their lives. I have therefore mastered how life should be spent because it is indeed all about being truthful about one’s own self. In the end, I would state that being a paramedic myself I see leadership being an intrinsic tenet of my personality. I am proud of who I am and what I bring to the fore, over and over again. If it were not for leadership, I would have found it hard to manifest my real self back and forth. I have seen lives going by from this world up close and personal and I know how it feels. Thus my entirety is based on the belief that if you do something worthwhile for the people of this world, nature has its own unique way of making you happy and contented with what you have and how you spend your life (Kelly, 1979). All said and done, my role has been phenomenal over the years ever since I joined the field of paramedics as it has given me a sense of elevation mentally and physically. I am respected within my circle of influence and my word is always taken in the most apt manner possible. I am proud of who I am and how I am able to look at people from a perspective which is not that easily decipherable by individuals around me, i.e. the ones who are not paramedics within their professional settings.
