The experiences that a child goes through in the early years of life have a great impact on his/her personality in the later years. Because of this, a child starts to learn from the very first day of his/her life. Much of the psychological development of a child happens in the very first year. In that regard, mothers, who are the first family member to be in contact with their children, seem to have a natural responsibility to carry.

Mothers have a very important role in the nurturing of a child, particularly in the preschool age. Therefore, mothers should be very careful in their attitude toward the child in the preschool age. The relationship between a mother and a child is mostly composed of feeding and attention that mothers should provide to the child in need. In the contemporary age, there is a growing trend amongst mothers to feed their babies with supplements. This makes it more convenient for other women to take care of children that are of breastfeeding age.

Many mothers prefer not to give their babies their milk. Although there is considerable evidence and scientific research to show that infant formulas, which are commercial attempts to duplicate mother’s milk using a complex combination of proteins, sugar, fats, and vitamins, may be nutritious enough to replace mother’s milk, they don’t contain antibodies found in breast milk. This is a strong point to encourage healthy mothers to breastfeed their babies. Breastfeeding is one of the closest relationships a mother and child can share. It provides ideal nourishment and a special bonding experience that many nursing mothers cherish (L. Hirsch). Breastfeeding is the most natural way to take care of a child.

Switching from breastfeeding to other supplements because of the child’s age can be a common problem for both mothers and babies. Typically by age two, the child can begin a new diet. This change in diet goes along with a new development in a child's personality. For the success of this transition, it is recommended to mothers not stop providing milk to their children, but bottle milk this time. At first time, this should be provided by someone else than the mother from whom the child would expect only the breast milk. Mothers have a tough time saying “no” to their children when they ask for milk at that age. It is recommended to give only one new food at a time and if the child dislikes the new food, to give it again later. This a period of training the child to do something new in his/her life and the method of success is important for the future personality of the child. He or she does not need to be forced upon or to be cherished to the point of never meeting a refusal from her/his mother.

Feeding is not the only form of child care that is required for a child to grow and properly develop. A child needs other forms of nourishment. A strong relationship with a father figure and socialization will help the child develop social skills and the love of a male figure. Male figures are important in children especially children that are at the age where they are learning. As previously stated, children need to experience positive experiences while they are learning and growing.

Having a positive male figure allows the child to bond with someone other than the mother. The child needs this separation experience so the child is not solely dependent on the mother. If a father is not available at home, the child can receive a bond with another adult figure such as a preschool or kindergarten teacher.

Interaction with other children other than brothers and sisters will help the child become socially active and develop people skills. A mother and father cannot provide these necessary life skills on their own. Proper child care also consists of making sure the child has the correct socialization. Socialization can come from playgroups or daycare facilities. All of the interactions will positively affect the child later in life.

Child care is certainly important for babies and children. Breastfeeding and supplements are healthy ways to feed a child and provide the child with the necessary nutrition. The fast rate that children can learn will leave them constantly wanting more and needing more.
