The author of the paper argues in a well-organized manner that knowledge of gas behavior can help critical processing facilities such as oil and gas platforms plan ahead and reduce the consequences of their operation in case of a gas leak involving poisonous and flammable gases such as H2S. These include analysis and understanding of various gas release scenarios, modeling toxic gas releases, and determining the community that may be affected by an accidental release from the plant.

Aims and Objectives
The report aims to contribute additional information that can help decision-makers make relevant and effective decisions to ensure the safe design of facilities, demonstrating how CFD modeling could be used effectively to predict the effects downwind following an accidental gas release event.

Main Achievements
This study achieved the following:
  • Gathered and analyzed information about gas behavior and understand the principle of gas releases and their impact on health and community.
  • Completed assessment of H2S impact on society by analyzing case studies of previous accidental toxic gas releases or spills. Identified and understand the risk associated with toxic gas release and behavior.
  • Understand, and explain the different legislations, regulations, and standards concerning the toxic gas release and its effect on nearby communities.
  • Understand and explain the principle behind gas dispersion and toxic gas behavior as affected by wind and other environmental factors.
  • Understand and explain different gas dispersion modeling and the suitability of CFD or Computational Fluid Dynamics in predicting dense gas releases.
  • Applied CFD Computer modeling to predict concentrations of H2S gas at different distances measured from the point of release. It also determined and demonstrated the inadequacy of 100m set back distance when the wind effect is considered.
