Also, it intends to explain the major reasons behind applying for my graduate program in the University of Arizona. Statement of Purpose I was raised with deep and deferential respect for the natural world around me. Since a young age I have been inculcated with the importance of science, whether to simply comprehend how the things work, or to contribute to significant research that would affect the lives of the future generation. My father has always been promoting his love of science; he would read many science related books with me during my school years. He explained me about the environmental facts and many other relevant factors. During my childhood, I played with my father in our small garden that we have at the front of our house. I would inspect leaves of different flowers and ask him many questions in relation to the shapes and color differences of leaves and flowers. My mother also appreciates my endeavors and always makes certain that I gain the best knowledge. While most of the children at that age would be busy in playing with friends or toys, I gave my maximum time for knowing the facts about environment. Environment is composed of several factors but most importantly, the two factors, i.e. soil and water, are the basic components of the environment necessary for the survival of life. However, the rapidly growing population and industrialization have given rise many environmental problems which have attracted my increased interest towards the subject. Water pollution and soil erosion have contributed towards increased problems for human beings. I have always been craving to apply my knowledge and skills in order to devise solutions for human beings to deal with the ever-increasing environmental issues. Increasing population has resulted in augmented domestic and industrial wastes. The resources we have are limited, but human beings are using these resources to meet their growing demands unprecedentedly. The time is not far away when there will be zero resources left for our consumption. In such circumstances, we need to be prepared to face such challenges. Contextually, the need for recycling and reusing has been ever increasing to avoid such crisis in future. The problem has provided us with wide career opportunities and ample scope now and in future for youth like me to acquire knowledge and involve in research activities for searching alternative modes of energy that could supplement the human needs and prevent the world from crisis. Soil and water conservation problems are being faced by almost all nations throughout the world. It can be said that my interest towards this subject has grown due to my inner urge to do something for the protection of environment and at the same time to accomplish my desires and interests through working in the concerned field of environment. My primary goal is to build my career in the field of environmental engineering so that I could contribute towards the nature and people (The Regents of the University of California). It is the field of environmental engineering that has particularly captured my interest. The desire to acquire the knowledge about soil and water has persuaded me to take courses in SWES-461-research soil and water conservation problems, principles of soil and water degradation by soil erosion, chemical transport in surface and ground water and ground water overdraft. I am also pursuing “SWES 464-physical and chemical processes influencing the behaviour of contaminants in the subsurface environment.” It also includes equilibrium and kinetic theory of solubilization-dissolution, volatilizations, sorption, hydrolysis, photolysis surface catalystsis and radioactive decay. At the same time, I have completed my high school from Mary Star of the Sea High School, San Pedro, California. During 2009, I was awarded with Academic Achievement Award presented for the top 10 percent of the graduating class. In the same year, I also received Citizenship Award and Blue & Gold Achievement award. An important factor for fully being prepared for the subject such as environmental engineering is having a good knowledge of computer skills. I have acquainted myself with a few courses in computer as well. I am also well versed in Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, Windows 7, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, MatLab and Photoshop. Since Chinese is my mother tongue, I am fluent in reading, writing and speaking the Chinese language. English was also one of my favorite subjects in my middle school time. Not as much as Chinese, but I am also good in reading, writing and speaking English. The language factor would not be a problem for me to obtain necessary knowledge. Apart from pre-stated skills, I have professional skills such as self-learning, good communication skills, ability to work in teams, writing and designing. I believe that a true self-learner enjoys the ultimate freedom to acquaint oneself with deep extraction of knowledge areas. In my opinion, self-learners are among the world’s most successful people. Consequently, the practice of self-learning is vital when one is determined to know every single point of the subject, especially environment where today nothing remains constant. I have been constantly focusing on self-learning initiative to sharpen my knowledge and skills. A good communication skill is an essence for a good student. An effective communication removes the barriers that may tend to exist among students. I have worked for enhancing my communication skills so that I could best exploit the advantages of learning and working in a team. Not the least, I actively participated in Olympic Club Beijing, China, 2008 where I helped foreigners to find their ways. I have also a good knowledge of translating Chinese to English, which I have been doing successfully since my high school. Additionally, I am continuously striving to improve my skills and knowledge that I could apply in acquiring knowledge in the environmental engineering subject. It is after a good deal of self-evaluation that I have decided to pursue graduate studies in environmental engineering as my major area with either of soil or water as the research field. This decision I have made is followed by my careful consideration of my interest, my academic background and my ultimate professional ambition. I am greatly fascinated by the environmental studies and its vast applications and I want to make my career in the field of environmental engineering. I am very much interested in linking science with other disciplines. I wholeheartedly feel that comprehensive facilities and competent faculties indeed would help in doing my research related work in future in your university. Furthermore, I have confidence that I could contribute substantially to the research activities of your university. To be precise, I believe that a good graduate program is an indispensable factor for recognizing my professional aspiration for becoming a competent researcher. Additionally, I believe that I possess the required motivation, intellectual capability and preparation to do justice to a challenging graduate program. I am quite certain that inspiring academic environment and interaction with the highly qualified faculties at your university will definitely be proving immensely beneficial for me now and in future professional life. It would be an honor for me to obtain admission to pursue a graduate program from the University of Arizona. I am confident that I will necessarily meet the requirements and the particularities of the curriculum set of your university. The course would provide me with an opportunity to fulfill my career ambition and also to devise possibilities to work towards alleviating certain environmental problems in future.
