“The specialization of medicine involving, pertaining to, and treating illness of the digestive tract is none other than Gastroenterology” (Ellerd, n.d.). The gastroenterology care starts with the mouth, mouth being the first organ in the path, and goes all through the body till the anus. The vastness of this field can be estimated from the fact that everything that exists between the two is included in the study of gastroenterology. According to the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA), a gastroenterologist is “a doctor who specializes in digestive system health.

The digestive system includes the stomach, small and large intestine, liver, gall bladder, and pancreas” (Kehoe, 2011). It was in 2007 when Jill Jack gained the position of the Clinic Nurse Manager as well as that of the Liver Transplant Nurse Coordinator in the GI Clinic. A clinic nurse manager takes care of the everyday activities that happen in the nursing unit of a hospital or any facility that provides the public with health care (Burgoon, 2011). It is the clinic nurse manager’s duty to administer the nursing staff that belongs to the unit, and coordinate the patient care as well as all practices conducted in the unit.

The decision making power for the personnel of the unit rests with the clinic nurse manager. . The liver transplant coordinator educates and counsels both the parties as well as their families. He/she also makes sure that the patients get the long term care after the transplantation has been done. The continuation of the emotional as well as physical care of the patients that have gone through the liver transplant along with their families is the responsibility of the liver transplant coordinator.

Long Term Care can be defined as a facility which provides the patients with the necessary skilled, rehabilitative and sustained nursing care in the activities that form part of their everyday routine. As the name implies, it is essentially the nursing care continued over a long period of time. Facilities included in the long term care are rehabilitation centers, nursing homes and hospitals for sustained chronic care (MedicineNet, 2011). I asked Jill Jack her biggest accomplishment as a Registered Nurse.

Jill Jack recognized her simultaneous work in the ICU and in GI as her biggest accomplishment. Jill Jack had obtained her Bachelor of Science Nursing Degree from the University of South Carolina back in 1998. It was a four year degree. Jill Jack said that she after high school, she first worked as a Medical Assistant and then as a Secretary in the legal work. After gaining some field experience, she decided to adopt Nursing as a profession. Jill Jack loves being the Liver Transplant Coordinator.

She likes the idea of taking care of the patients right from the conception till long after the liver transplant. Jill Jack likes social work, so she resolved to become a nurse. Nursing is a profession where an individual can truly feel the pain of patients and can interact
