Summary – This is a travel magazine article by Robert Young Pelton. The article discusses the various places where tourists are vulnerable to criminals who could easily with their glib talk cheat them out of their valuables such as wallets, cameras, jewelry and even their passports and credit cards. The author explains that robbing and being a thug are the norm of the day, especially where tourist spots are concerned. He also discusses the regular hot spots that the tourists are likely to visit such as Liquor bars and other entertainment spots where they are most vulnerable. The article also has an overview of some of the most dangerous countries for tourists to visit, such as North America/ Mexico, South America, Africa and Asia. Analysis – The article was quite useful and could be used for supplying a lot of information on the subject. Reflection – I found the article interesting and understood that the author has taken a lot of trouble gathering important information. 2. Iuri Tarabanov (2008) World’s Most Dangerous Countries for Tourists. Travel Web Directory. Summary This is a web article that reports on Travel news. The author Iuri Tarabanov sheds light on the world’s top 10 most dangerous countries for tourists. The data collected is from “iJet Intelligent Risk Systems” and the renowned magazine “Forbes” has contributed by composing the level or rating of the most dangerous countries for tourists. The agency took into account factors such as security services, terrorism, kidnapping, civil disorders and other criminal and geopolitical stability factors while doing the rating. Some of the most dangerous countries in the world as noted by the author were Somali, Iraq, Afghanistan, Haiti, Pakistan, Sudan, The democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, Zimbabwe and Palestine. Analysis The article specifies the different types of dangers significant to each of the above countries and sheds light on the type of danger that is prevalent in these countries thereby creating an awareness on the dangers that tourists are exposed to if they visit them. Reflection The data that was given by the “iJet Intelligent Risk Systems and “Control Risks” agencies was not only enlightening but it also served to kindle awareness among the people of the different kinds of risks involved while visiting different countries. This type of article would surely be very useful in my study on dangerous countries for tourists. 3. The Washington Post Newspaper, Athens Travel Forecast. Good Deals for Tourists who don’t mind occasional risks. Summary The Washington post news article sheds light on the tourism in Athens, Greece. It talks about the beautiful archipelago, beaches and buildings which is a welcome escape for tourists to relax and enjoy themselves. At same time, it warns tourists of impending dangers in the form of strikes and violent protests that suddenly erupt and causes major problems for tourists. The article in the Washington Post also discusses the best restaurants for food, but at the same time it creates awareness on the rising crime in the city and the drug trafficking that takes place there. Analysis The article in the Washington Post gives more details on the beauty spots, food and restaurants found in Athens Greece, but however shed some light on the dangers that the tourists may be exposed to. Though one cannot say that Greece is a highly dangerous country, yet the paper creates an awareness about what to expect if one visits the place. Reflection Though the Washington Post is a reliable newspaper, this particular article is not very relevant to my research study because it more describes the beauty and hotspots of Greece but has little on the dangers tourists might be exposed to. However, the article would be partially useful to include in my study. 4. John Keay (2010) The Mammoth Book of Travel in Dangerous Places, Running Press; Reissue edition. Pgs. 480. Summary ‘The Mammoth Book of Travel in Dangerous Places’ by John Keay enlightens us on many of the great explorers and other important personalities who made a great mark in History by traveling across the world. Some of these great personalities are James Cook, David Livingstone, Sir Edmund Hillary, Meriwether Lewis and Roald Amundsen. In this book, the author highlights the dangers faced by great explorers and others who dared to travel long distances and stay away from the safety of their homes and exposing themselves to a lot of danger in the course of them making history. The author John Keay details many of these dangers that came in the form of attacking tribes, Red Indians and the like. Analysis This book is especially useful because it sheds light on the different types of dangers faced by people long ago. It particularly helps us to understand the difference of the dangers that were faced before and the dangers faced now. It helps us to understand the extent of progress made by man because the dangers that are relevant in today’s contemporary world is much more sophisticated than what it was before. Reflection This book is an in- depth study that details the dangers faced by people long ago. This book helps me to understand the differences in the kind of dangers in today’s society and hence it would be quite valuable to my study. 5. Paul Collier, Reviewed by Marisa O. Ensor (2011) Wars, Guns and Votes: Democracy in Dangerous Places. Journal on African Conflict and Peace Building Review. Vol. 1, No. 1 Summary This is a journal article by Marisa O. Ensor that sheds light on the role of democracy among the world’s most impoverished nations due to the absence of accountability. It also speaks of the absence of such accountability measures that encourage anti-democratic practices that triggers antisocial behavior among people. According to Collier, "democracy is a force for good," (p. 11) the West has "promoted the wrong features of democracy: the facade rather than the essential infrastructure" (p. 8). Collier explains that democracy in certain countries like Africa, is obtained through bribery and repression which has led to widespread corruption and poor socio-economic conditions. Such places are highly volatile and prone to danger and therefore not good for tourism. Analysis Though this journal does not directly explain about the dangers faced by tourists in Africa, it enlightens us on the dangers posed by a weak democracy which poses a threat to people from other nations who visit them. A country with a poor socio- economic background would not only be bad for tourism but also pose dangerous for tourists who visit them. Reflection This journal would be particularly helpful in my study because it depicts danger to tourists from a very different angle. 6. Travel.State.Gov. A Service of the Bureau of Consular Affairs. U.S Department of State. Summary This article is periodically published by the Government on travel warnings about areas that are unstable or dangerous in other countries. When news is received about any long term or protracted conditions that prevail in any country either due to climactic conditions, terrorism or any major catastrophe, the Government takes up the responsibility of warning people about the risk involved. People in America are requested to consider risking their lives by traveling to dangerous and vulnerable regions. Even when the Government experiences constraint about their ability to assist American citizens, due to closure of a consulate or embassy, it issues travel warnings for people to avoid danger. Analysis This write up about Travel Warnings by the Government is especially important because we can be sure that the news is authentic and likewise take action. Such information is very important to tourists as it warns them of the risks and dangers involved if they travel to such countries. Reflection This source would be quite useful to my study because not only is it authentic information but also gives a clear picture of the country which poses a danger due to their present condition and so should be avoided.
