It governs the actions of the people and the government and has the power to evolve in accordance for what the citizens want. The preamble to the constitution states exactly what as an army officer is expected to do. “We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
” The first part is to address the aspects of leadership. Leadership can be defined in many different concepts using many different theories. As an army officer, the transactional leadership theory and transformational leadership theory are what guide me as well as the constitution, warrior ethos, and army values. Transactional theory relies on the use of rewards and punishments in order to lead. In my line of work, this requires recognizing those for exemplary performance and those for under average performance.
As an officer, I deal with only the major aspects in which require paperwork, because I delegate my authority to the NCOs that are in charge underneath me. The other theory which is of importance is the transformational leadership theory. . This is exemplified in the army values of: Loyalty, Duty, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. This is the first thing that is drilled into you as a soldier, whether you are enlisted or an officer. As an officer, the concept of leading by example and personal integrity becomes more important because you are responsible for leading everyone around you as well as being personally accountable.
Loyalty is extremely important, not only to yourself and to your country, but also to the soldiers that serve beside you. In particular, many soldiers look up to their officers because they are the leaders in the forefront either serving as platoon leaders or company commanders. This all derives from the preamble in order to “establish justice and insure domestic Tranquility”. The main directive of the military is clear: protecting her and her citizens from harm. The United States has been in countless engagements ranging from the World Wars all the way to our current War on Terrorism.
As a leader in general, this involves displaying all the personal army values as well as living up to the warrior ethos, “I will always place the mission first. I will never accept defeat. I will never quit. I will never leave a fallen comrade.” This all relates in providing for the common defense in that it is the duty of the American military to use all of the personnel and technologies in order to protect the citizens. As an officer, this requires me to command the soldiers under me in order to preserve the union.
