THE INDIVIDUAL EXPERIENCING HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE RE: NON SMOKING POLICY Faculty Care as defined by Leininger(2006 as cited by McFarland and Eipperle, 2008) is “assistive, supporting and enabling experiences or ideas towards others evident or anticipated needs to ameliorate or improve a human condition or lifeway.” Care is also respect, protection and comfort (Watson, 1979). Care is the primary segment in the policy making, determining procedural performance and performance evaluation of the nursing professional. (McFarland and Eipperle, 2008) There are various national and local policies influencing the experiencing of health and social care in adult nursing (Allen and Lyne, 2006). Adult nursing professional is one of the challenging and important aspects of the health care services (Bransford, 2006). NMC Code of Conduct consists of the proficiency standards that determine the essential skills for the nursing care personnel. These consist of various educational standard of proficiency in nursing which is used in determining the nursing standards of education (Burns and grove, 2005; Allen and Lyne, 2006). The first concept of professionalism in relation to the NMC Code of Conduct as listed is “Discuss in an informed manner the implications of professional regulation for nursing practice” (1a). This code of conduct helps in maintaining the knowledge and awareness regarding nursing professionals. The faculties and senior members can help the nursing students in this process (Durkin, 2007). During this process, the professional also get introduced to their role limitations and rights during nursing care (Scanlon, Clark and McGuiness, 2008). Specifically to the smoking cessation cases, there are various challenges experienced by the professionals involved such attendance shortage, measuring the rates of people stopping smoking after such sessions and cost implications of such programs (Spencer, Unsworth, & Burke, 2001, p. 41). There can be situations where particular patient is unable to stop smoking or a nursing student is not able to cease smoking the seniors and experienced professionals can help (Durkin, 2007; Peckham and Meeabeau, eds, 2007) The second aspect is "recognise situations that require referral to a registered practitioner” (1d). This is one of the most crucial aspects of the nursing profession to understand when additional help and expertise is needed for care in order to avoid any loss or harm to the patients. Nursing is a job of care that requires person to have high level of integrity and act in ethical manner (Zulkosky, 2009). The patients’ well-beings at times are totally dependent on the care provided by the nursing professional. Therefore, 2a “Demonstrate an awareness of, and apply ethical principles to, nursing practice” is must for this profession. The healthcare services are gamut of services and sometimes the client needs assistance of more than one expert in order to achieve the best health goals. Nursing care professionals are the primary caring party in such case. It is much needed that these professionals interact with each other and share the information regarding the patient that can help in saving him for negative consequences or speeding up the recovery process. This is the reason 4a: “Discuss methods of, barriers to, and the boundaries of, effective communication and interpersonal relationships” has been included. The patients, clients and other stakeholders need to be communicated regarding different aspects of healthcare services. The bad or worst news should also be delivered in the manner that it is not shocking for the client and helps in dealing with the situation. The 4c is about utilising “appropriate communication skills with patients and clients”. McFarland and Eipperle (2008) relate care in nursing practice with the actions, attitude and practice to caring actions, attitude and practice that helps healing process and well being of the other person, prevent the illness, disabilities, minimises sufferings and deaths. Nursing care is one of the important aspects of medical systems today that requires integration of culture of care to the routine of professionalism, clinical practices and approaches of primary care. Individuals working for nursing practices have their own limitations in terms of abilities for which they should consistently upgrade their skills, keep them informed and should importantly be aware of their abilities and limitations while delivering nursing care (8c). For this it is important for them to work consistently on the basis of care plan developed for any patient (8b). Nursing skills are developed in due course of time with exposure to different situations and patient conditions (Zulkosky, 2009). There are various situations in which a skilled and experienced nursing professional can take better decisions. It is a continuous learning and development process which depends on the nursing professionals (16a and 16b). Individuals need to identify areas where learning is needed, logic behind it and objectives of learning goals (Zulkosky, 2009). Health care environment and Safe care delivery: Health care environment needs to be patient focused. Every client in a healthcare setting is assed for the healthcare services needed (7b). Therefore the care needs are determined on the basis of initial assessments and ongoing assessments of the patient. The nursing professionals if demonstrate skills of developing their knowledge base, that helps them in accurate health assessment of the client and assists in the implementation of the health care plan for their patients (8c). In this process, nursing professionals learns to recognise different conditions of nursing care and applicability and effectiveness of nursing care plans (11a). It is very important for the nursing care professionals, to understand and apply various health and safety principles and policies to achieve the best health objectives for the patients (Zulkosky, 2009). Therefore it can be concluded that the NMC Code provides a robust framework for the nursing care professionals for delivering high standards of services and focuses on the learning, development and growth of the knowledge base of the nursing care professionals. This code outlines the basic requirements for the expected professionalism and covers all the aspects that can determine the professionalism behaviour of nursing care professionals. This also aims at providing high level of care and standardised services in broader sense and individualised services for the individual clients. The standardisation of services leaves no room for unprofessional nursing practices. Nursing care plans ensures that the services are in line with requirements of the patients. The NMC provides basic structure but allows flexibility to the nursing care professionals for learning and development opportunities, encourages to contact the specialists and other experienced professionals when needed and identify the situations in which health care plans is not effective and requires change. In order to ensure that these basic requirements are met by the nursing professionals, timely audits and risk management practices is adopted. These processes also help in identifying the good and bad performances and take appropriate measures.
