EXTENDING THE SCHOOL Extending a school day will create some extra time for carrying out the activities expected to be accomplished in that day. This can be done so as to create more time for the students to complete their assignments given during the day. It is however not easy to extend the school day as opposition may arise from those who may not like an extension of the school day. This therefore calls for detailed consultations between the teachers, students and the working staff in the school. Students will tend to oppose the extension of the school day most as they would wish to have some time to rest after the long day. On the contrary, some may propose for a longer school day in order to create time for further studies. Disagreements over the extension of the school day are likely to arise mostly from the students. A change in the time schedule will create tension in the school as some will oppose while others propose for the extension of the school day. In order to create harmony between the two sides, genuine reasons have to be given as to why the school day is being extended (Alessandro, 2002). This can only be achieved by coming to an agreement after a detailed consultation. The consultations must involve every sector in that learning institution including the workers in the school. A big controversy is likely to arise from the students if the school day is extended. Some students will tend to oppose the issue of extending the school day as this will limit the time they have for resting. Some will claim to be tired after the long working hours of the day therefore extending the school day will be an added burden to them. They will therefore do their best in trying to oppose the extension of the school day (Begue, 2006). This is because they would like to have some time to rest. A drastic change in the scheduled time will create tension among all the sectors in the learning institution. This is because the extension of the school day will affect the time they have for other activities outside school. Most of the students are involved in sporting activities after school while others get to assist their parents back at home. Disputes are therefore likely to arise from the students as their time will be taken by the extension of the school day. Students also need some extra time to complete their assignments given by the teacher during the day (David, 2012). Extending the school day will therefore create tension as the students will have inadequate time to complete their assignments. This translates to a short time of rest to the students after the long day and this will affect their concentration in their studies in the following day. Some students may not be able to concentrate in their studies for long hours during the day. Extending the school day will therefore affect them negatively especially in their studies. In most cases school days are extended so as to cover some pending jobs either in the classroom or in other areas. Teachers may decide to add some extra time in the schedule so as to complete the remaining parts of the syllabus (Lynde, 2007). This happens when the scheduled time is not enough to complete the class work planned for the learning period. A school day may also be extended in order to carry out some extra activities outside the classroom. These are like the sporting activities, cleaning the school compound or even doing some charitable work to the community around. Teachers may also oppose the extension of the school day as some get tired from teaching the students the whole day. The school management should consult the teachers before they decide to extend the school day. The consultations should be made between the management and the teaching staff in the school. This will help to avoid misunderstanding between the teachers and the management. If this was to arise, the whole school will be affected and this will interfere with the running of the institution (Walecki, 2001). Time should be managed properly during the day and this will help accomplish all the set objectives of the day. This will push away the necessity of extending the school day. Extending the school day will also cause the school management to incur an extra cost in running the institution. This is because the teachers may demand a payment on the extra hours they spend with their students. This is still the case with the non teaching staff as they will also demand an increase in their salaries in due to the extra hours they work. Extending the school day should therefore be done away with as it is has little benefit to the people in the school (David, 2012). In support of extending the school day, a genuine reason should be given and this should be accompanied by an agreement between the both sides. A longer school day will help the students in having their extra studies in the school. This will be a big boost to their academics as they can also hold some discussion groups during the added time. A school day should be extended so as to create more time for doing the extra activities within the school (Begue, 2006). If the school day is extended, the students will have ample time to do their assignments. The extra time added is also crucial as the students can consult their teachers in areas they did not understand during the day. Besides the classroom activities, the added time will help the students engage in co curricula activities. These are things like games, music performances and charitable work to the community around. This will help them improve in games and also remain competitive in other sectors like the music performances (Alessandro, 2002). This is because they have an added time for practicing in such activities like the games. It will also act as a refreshing activity to the students after the long day learning in their classrooms. By extension of the school day the overall standards of the school will greatly improve due to the added time. The workers in the school will get more time to perform their tasks and this will lead to higher standards in all sectors. A lot is required to be done in order to persuade people to go for the extension of the school day. The opposing side has to be convinced that the extension of the school day will be of benefit to the whole school in general (Walecki, 2001). This will result from the more time created by extending the school day by some hours. The students will be the ones to benefit most from the idea of extending the school day. The students will have more time for revision of what they have covered during the day. This will help them have a deeper understanding of the areas covered in the class during the day. In the areas the student fails to understand better, they have time to enquire more from their teachers (David, 2012). Through such consultations, the performance of the students will improve and this will be reflected in the examinations. Despite the commitments one has to meet when the school day is extended, benefits are there and this can be a persuading point to those opposing the extension of the school day. The students will have more time to carry out their co curricular activities like the games and running their clubs. This will be reflected in better performances in such activities like the games (Begue, 2006). In order to achieve more in all sectors in the school, more time is required and this can only be achieved by extending the school day. The created time will be used to carry out the pending jobs in the school. The extended school day will also be of great importance to the teachers as they will have ample time to organize the following day’s work. This will help create a smooth flow of activities in the school. The more time created will help the teachers in marking the assignments handed in by the students during the day. This will ensure that there is ample time for everyone in the school to carry their own tasks (Alessandro, 2002). This will lead to production of good results by the students in their class work and even in their examination results. In order to accomplish the set goals in the school, ample time is required. This can only be gotten from the extension of the school day. The created time will help the teachers complete the syllabus in time and have more time for revision with their students. It is also a good opportunity for the candidates in the school to utilize the created time in their revision. They will also have more time for revision in their weak areas before they sit for their examinations. The extension of such school days will be of great benefit to the non teaching staff in the school as they will have more time to perform their tasks (Walecki, 2001). By utilizing the added time properly, the students will be able to carry out their day’s activities thereby avoiding procrastinating some tasks. Parents should be notified on the extension of the school day so as to plan for the day and the long time that the students are away from them. The extension of the school day will be a great boost to the performance of the non teaching staff in the school. They will have ample time to carry out their activities and an improvement will be seen in the school (David, 2012). In order to achieve this, proper arrangement need to be made and this has to involve even the teachers so as to come up with a proper time schedule. I would support the extension of the school day as it has numerous benefits to both the students and the teachers. The students will have ample time for their revision and also to complete their assignments. The added time will be of great importance to the students and if well utilized, their performance will greatly improve. The students will have more time to do consultations in areas they did not understand in the class. More time will also be available to carry out some extra activities outside the classrooms. The non teaching staff will also get enough time to carry out their tasks and this will lead to proper running of the school. In order to achieve enough from the extended school day, proper time management needs to be put in place (Begue, 2006). The school management should ensure that the extended school day is fully utilized for the benefit of everyone in the school. The students should also be consulted in the making of such decisions as extending the school day. This will help reduce the opposition from the students and therefore creating harmony in the school. The extended school day will also be a benefit to the teachers as there will be enough time to complete what had been planned during the day. This will result into a good performance by the students in their daily activities and in their examinations too. The improvement will also be seen in the co curricular activities like the sports and boosting of their club organizations. Much can be achieved by extending the school day as more time will be made available and this will translate to better results in all areas in the learning institution (Alessandro, 2002). Extension of the school day should be supported as this will greatly change the overall standards of the school mostly in the academics. This can be seen in the improved performance of the students in the classroom. The students will also get enough time to complete their assignments given by their teachers during the day (David, 2012). If such a thing is supported by both the teachers and the students, good results will be seen both in the class and in the activities done outside class. In conclusion, the extension of the school day will also be of benefit to the candidates as they will have ample time for revision for their examinations. Extending the school day will be of much benefit to everyone in the school and this will lead to improvement in the standards of the school. The school day should be extended so as to hit the set targets in the school. The added time will be of great benefit to the teachers and also to the students. References Alessandro, C. L., 2002.
